It's a cross. It doesn't have to suit the perfect dimensions of a cube. It's a symbol that represents the sun over the water and it's eternal nature of dieing at dusk and being reborn during the mourning for a new dawn and a new day.

The sun swears to return to fight the darkness, and he does. He swears before he dies on the cross god will raise him up new reborn. This happens and everyone can see him ascend into the heavens. And then by noon he starts to come back to the world, to die on his cross on the horizon.
