Why aren't aliens everywhere?
If life were abundant, the government wouldn't be able to hide it from us. If anything aliens would be the government and there would be nothing weird or secret about it. We don't hide from ants or our own livestock. Why would aliens do that? It seems more likely that aliens aren't here. But why?

Their tech is way above ours. Take the dark forest theory. The dark forest theory is a proposed explanation for Fermi's paradox, suggesting that the universe is a dangerous place where civilizations remain silent and hidden to avoid detection and destruction by other, more powerful species. The theory posits that all civilizations are like armed hunters in a dark forest, and to survive, they must eliminate any other "hunter" they encounter, as the universe lacks the ability for clear communication and reliable assessment of intentions. Or, as above, so below. We look at animals in a zoo, same thing for the aliens. As it stands now we are not ready for disclosure, and it will never happen. Too much riding on it, than just our sanity. The credibility of the US govt.

How would you see them?
First, life on other planets orbiting other stars is very far away. Too far to see. The only way we see far away exoplanets is by measuring the difference in light when they pass in front of their suns. Since some of that light passes through their atmosphere we can make inferences about the composition thereof. The only thing we can see about their planets, if any of the exoplanets do have life, will therefore be a bump on a graph where certain spectra are not what is expected. However, science has already decided that every unexpected bump on a graph is explainable through volcanic action, unique planetary composition, and space dust.
Even if we did see evidence of life no one would know because scientists would find a way to reproduce those conditions with some convoluted physical process, then they claim that "the lack of evidence for extraterrestrial life is evidence that this evidence is not really evidence", then they rub their hands together and go back to leeching grant money while waging backroom wars against any and all scientists daring enough to claim "it's aliens!".

Take for instance BLC1, a signal from the direction of Proxima Centauri which has a clearly artificial signature. The reason scientists give for why this signal is not extraterrestrial: it exhibits too much artificiality. Yep, "earth radio equipment produces signatures like this so it can't be extraterrestrial". Scientists really do huff some potent copium when it comes to alien evidence denial.

But as soon as you see one clear case of extraordinary evidence that cannot be denied - then all of a sudden the massive backlog of real evidence that has already been gathered will suddenly be more likely to be extraterrestrial than not, since one piece of evidence that there is life elsewhere means their convoluted physics hypothesis gymnastics is the less likely solution. Once one thing is confirmed to be aliens, it's all likely aliens.

Often, if you have an aphid problem you you likely have an ant problem because they keep other predators away and protect their crop of aphids.

You're an aphid, realising you aren't seeing a lot of other predators because you are a controlled crop. They either don't exist, aren't "loud" enough for us to detect, or are too far away/haven't been "loud" enough for long enough for us to detect.

My money's on us being alone (from a technological civ point of view) with The Great Filter explaining how we are alone. When I say great filter, I don't think it's just one filter; I think there's a series that whittles down the probabilities to near zero, with filters including but not limited to:
star system forming with the right mix/proportions of elements (hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, ect...)
planet within the star system forming in the star's "habitable zone"
life forms on that planet - that life becomes complex (eucaryotic-like)
life becomes multi-cellular
that multi-cellular life develops a "brain"
those "brains" become smart enough to make tools, and the creature possessing those "brains" have appendages capable to make and improve upon those tools
those creatures evolved in an environment that allows for tools more complex/advanced than a rock
the creatures develop a "society" more advanced than hunter-gather (something like our neolithic revolution)
a system of "writing" develops
something akin to the industrial revolution occurs
and this is probably the most important: all the above occurs before the planet is sterilized by something...impact, gamma ray burst, whatever

I would say the above are the bare minimum filters, but I wouldn't be surprised if I left out a few, including whatever may still be in our future....

The Fermi paradox is one such silly theory because it completely ignored universal laws and karmic dynamics. Self replicating probes are still limited by the speed of light. They're actually slower than the speed of light because they need to self replicate. Probes being able to live anywhere is not the problem nor the solution here. I said that most developed stars would likely be less developed or equal to our development, not that they're all magically equally developed to us like some RTS game. You claim that we've only been doing technology for a bit when a species could have been doing it for billions of years. I don't think the probabilities of even getting our technology are very high, and I also think there's a probability of "fizzling out", meaning a species just doesn't advance past a certain point or they just die somehow. Time increases the chances of that happening, so it's not just like species keep advancing technologically with certainty given more time. In fact, the opposite is more likely, because a species becomes over-specialized, top-heavy, and overly reliant on technology without a basic understanding of simple methods of survival.
