In reality it’s subtle and more like brainwashing, and debatable whether the origin is the Jungian shadow or external forces. Because of this, shadow work/integration is in my opinion very dangerous. It inherently makes you more suggestible and open to sinister ideas and behaviour, and if there is an external influence it would be difficult to distinguish from a subconscious part of your own mind.

Viral ideologies are closely related. A good example is how some young men unravel after being seduced by incel talking points. The process of becoming more magically sensitive opens you to 'higher' influences and the possibility of their existence. As above, so below. So as you come to believe in these things, ritual cleansing, grounding, and purification become more important, as does the courage to break taboo and face the reality of the supernatural head on. It is real and movies intentionally well poison the reality. Possession itself is quite rare but what's really common is demonic obsession and oppression. There's loads of ritual abuse survivors who'll tell you their parents and community leaders were engaging in ritualistic molestation and making them sacrifice animals and even other children. My theory as to why possession is more common in poor countries is because 1. There is a more spiritual worldview prevalent, not just Sunday Mass and moral guidelines, but seeing all phenomena through a spiritual lens first 2. Substance abuse and organised crime are very common in developing countries. A mind open to the supernatural, destabilised by trauma and chemicals is fertile ground for possession, obsession and madness.
