Clankers.
Clankers are the software programs, or software-driven mechanical robots that cannot operate outside of their programming. For all intensive purposes

they are a dumb terminal, receiving updates, operating within their parameters, communicating back to their server. Some replicate and spawn more clankers.
The organic equivalent is an npc, hylic, or those schmoes that can't visualize an 8-bit apple. They require a constant stream of low grade information, otherwise they have nothing to relay to other bots. Like clankers, their purpose is to continue or complete their programming directive. Many of them also replicate, like clankers, as part of their programming.
