Crowley died like a dog, so did Spare, Blavatsky was a charlatan, Dee suffered the same fate (though this was more of him being seriously misled as a result of a skill issue than it was him being a larper ). But we can discern actual successful magicians and wizards and those are the ones you want to learn from. Not because theyre notorious but because you can see that their magic worked for them. Occultists are basically e-celeb worshippers and prize somebodies notoriety over their actual abilities in using magic successfully.

Yes but barrett corrected Agrippa through practice. The biggest issue is that Agrippa was an armchair and if you try to practice his stuff you start noticing the glaring issues with his techniques. Issues that can only be ironed out with direct spirit contact and a knowledge of kabbalah/Hebrew. Agrippa was basically a copyist that organized the work into one tome. Barrett was an actual conjurer and knew the kabbalah more intimately which is why he was able to correct Agrippa.

Crowley shaped the world and founded a religion that's still around. I don't think he was necessarily correct about everything, but people are still discussing him today. If there was nothing to him then he'd be forgotten by now like every other insane rich person.

His weird experiences involving his wife in Egypt and the founding of Thelema as well as his crazy experiences attested to by Neuberg point to him having some ability.

I don't necessarily think those things mean that he was very powerful, but I do think he had some ability and was very driven. Those things mean you can be remembered by history, and his discoveries about sex magick and his decision to tell the world mean that occultism would never again be so hidden. Also, when someone discovers the path, they inevitably learn about Crowley sooner or later-- that has to mean something.

Some of the most talented magicians I know of within my indirect social circle work their shit within two weeks tops. To go for nearly two decades and then pull off what amounts to "I'm innocent, but yeah you got evidence that could convict my ass hard" isn't very indicative of a good magician.
