I think animals have high intelligence but are slaves to their instincts so will always react and act instinctively as opposed to intelligently. I went to squish a Misquito and way it reacts is not just base fear, there is a knowledge of the situation present.

He considers that mammals belong to the category of sensitive souls. They have awareness of their immediate environment and might have some intuition. They can also react emotionally to stimulus but lack the capability of higher reasoning.
