It’s more about the prompt. It could have been something like “Summarize this news story: x” where x should be a full story, but maybe it only got a keyword snippet like “Charlie Kirk assassination Tyler Robinson college event” and it basically wrote a fiction story with that premise. I see these errors in a project I’m working on to summarize calls, if you give it an empty call transcript or a minimal one it will make up details to fill in the gaps.

Also it being a new event means it’s NOT in the training dataset yet. Limitation of current models is they can’t just ingest and update. You need a new training run. So the model doesn’t have any info about the event in its dataset yet like it does for history. So it’s easy for it to spit our wrong info about brand new events.

They probably do weekly training runs, more frequently probably wouldn’t be possible for a cutting edge model. They probably give it a set of data to refer to in the prompt and give it the ability to access other datasets as needed like how ChatGPT can google.
But just like how ChatGPT doesn’t google everything neither does grok and these summaries might be generated without “deep thinking” or research features, it all just depends on their backend architecture. The model can produce wildly different responses based on the prompt and data provided and tools it has access to. So like user questions on x that have high impact might be Full Grok which is expensive per request and these summaries might be Low Grok which doesn’t have tools and is cheaper. Usually they provide enough info to make the summarizer work but a mistake happened here. A lot of this still is still human assisted too so it could easily be a human data entry error.
