Put simply, it's the All-Seeing Eye, which represents the Light.
The upward-facing triangle could be taken to represent a pyramid - or to more directly represent God, since a triangle that points upward and a triangle that points downward have distinct meanings.

I've just been visiting a real nice city in the French Flanders. That symbol is everywhere in their religious iconography (straightforward Catholicism characterized by a strong hostility for the protestant influence), even in their churches, it's the eye of providence, the all seeing eye of God, put in a triangle that represents the holy trinity. It doesn't discredit the schizos explanations, but this symbol used to be part of the official Catholic canon
