A lot of what Paul said were blinds and traps to ensnare the blind and those dead to the spirit, those who aren’t captive to the spirit are slaves to the word and world. A lot of what Paul said was so ridiculously oppressive, self-contradictory and constraining in order to get people to wake up and not rely on scaffolding

Bold to assume that we have is an accurate account of what Paul said when many people are pretty sure that at least some of it is forgeries and interpolations and has been cut and pasted together. Supposing that in reality the situation is even worse than the people with reputations to manage are willing to claim with confidence might go some way to explaining why it's so seemingly self-contradictory imo.
