Okay so in the 90s the internet was exclusive to nerds and the technologically inclined. We had occult bbs boards then there were just less people on the internet. In the 00s the social aspect of it was relegated to teenagers and young adults, it was still too difficult for the lowest common denominator to use with efficiency, most of us that spent a considerable amount of time online had to pick up basic web languages and networking skills to use it, and required a home computer to use. It all started with the purchase of Twitter by Elon. This was the turning point. After that all social media platforms needed to follow suit 1. because they'd lose part of their user base 2. eventually it was going to be hard to control now that the "cat was out of the bag".
