Yeah, reminds me of that scene with the Zion council member that spoke to Neo that Zion needed machines in order to survive but those machines didn't want to kill them, even though Neo asked him what did he mean by that and admittedly he didn't know, but it was a much interesting scene
I think that means the machines were having a spiritual impasse, and used humanity to answer their unanswerable question about ego and oneness (Agent Smith = Ego, everything becomes him, dangerous tyranny of ego, Neo = One, Oneness, he "defeats" Smith by surrendering)
So, the machines were like Zion, they needed humans in order to answet their existential question, which the answer was love
