There is a thing called the intermediate state (or states), where your counsciouness experiences another band of reality, not the somatic one, the material one... but the imaginal, the barzakh, as the tibetan book of the dead states, there are many bardos, reality when awaken is just a persistent dream, when you die, you will go to another bardo... most people (who did not attain gnosis when alive) fall in the "karmic", "infernal", "demonic" traps, there are states of torture, inquistion, they are collectors of tax.
>but what about good experiences
They are mostly false, these arbiters know how to "customize" the ride... Greeks talked about entities that offered some kind of memory wiping liquid, to ensure that no memories would be retained when the rebirth process ocurred..
Look into the moon-saturn matrix, and the spiritual gate of capricorn.
>why they meditate
To raise awareness, to see beyond the bardos, to see beyond the dreams. Think of it as being lucid dreaming on steroids, reality checking everything, to attain the ultimate truth... When someone who has attained gnosis dies, he shall walk unharmed by the traps, and reunite with the Logos, without losing individuality, as the notion of non-dualism is demonic (there is no dissolution into the pleroma, but a infinite climbing towards bythos, theosis.... gnosis guides one to theosis.)
