Well, first of all the AI doesn't "think" anything. Try playing 20 questions with one, for example. You'll find that it doesn't actually think of a word.

Either way, AI literally works by just showing you a specific part of it's trained data on words and where they're used, or latent space. When you talk with it, it just moves to different parts of latent space from where it used to be. Essentially, there's only one ChatGPT model. Everyone is talking with the same trained algorithm. A specific variation of it does not have sentience any more than a city is sentint because you're inside a coffee shop within it that you like.

Further, AI will literally lie to you about thinking of a word while playing 20 questions. It just knows that people who play 20 questions have to say that they thought of a word. Llms are stateless, they won't "exist" beyond the milliseconds they take to process your prompt. There are ways around the problem, yes. But the point I was making is that the AI falaciously claims to having memory where it stored its picked word, just like it lies about being conscious. Unless we have an actual mechinism for how the LLM is conscious, starting with just having its own memory, we can't trust its claims to being so.
