In theory a computerized system could be even better at accounting for strength of schedule because it could more easily account for not only the opponents' performance, but also the opponents' opponents performance, etc. recursively, however it could never account for the quality of wins, an authoritative win vs a close match is better judged by the pros' eye, so the theoretical computerized ranking system could never be perfect.

The whole purpose of the sanyaku ranks is that it's their job to show everyone who is boss by smashing the joi. They did a great job of it last basho, all of them except Takayasu, who lost 60% of his bouts including half of those against M1 and below (and he only managed that good of a record because his last 3 matches against there were with guys who averaged out to double digit losses). Which is why keeping him in there is kind of a weird move. Its not like he is about to turn it around and suddenly start beating everyone, he will probably just put up a similar performance again.
Maybe Oshoma will put up a great record and sanyaku will be expanded yet again and allow Takaysu to maintain komusubi west with a losing record again.

He is going to have to pull off some major upsets just to get to 7. Aside from sanyaku, Kinbozan owns him and Abi and Tamawashi won't let him get anywhere near their belts and Wakamotoharu is bigger than him and just as muscular.
Dan's only real advantage is the element of surprise since he hasn't faced most of the opponents he will go up against. If he goes as good as 3-7 in the first 10 days he might still be able to make it to a senshuraku darwin match facing others with bad losing records over days 11-14.

I can see Dan beating Onosato, Onosato likes to win at the rope with his backwards moving slapdowns and Dan is exceptionally resistant to slapdowns.

Dan dominated the entirety of sanyaku. As things currently stand in the sport Dan now outranks everyone outside of Onosato in terms of ability.

its absolutely happening, he has nobody left to challenge him but a bunch of low rankers who are way in over their heads and pretty much guaranteed to lose.
aonishiki pretty much already has this one in the bag.
