Miniatures
Got a friend group into various tabletop type things, DnD/40k/OPR and the like. Was hoping for some guidance on learning to 3d model specifically for terrain/minis in this general sort of 15mm-32mm scale with maybe the biggest stuff being roughly action figure sized stuff?
Have a fairly ok PC and I'm not completely retarded. I figure Blender is the easiest way and with me just hearing about 4.5 apparently being newly release and LTS I imagine this is as good a time as any.
Not assuming I'll be making great stuff right away and am thinking of taking this on for about a year and worst case come out with some kinda skill set.
Where to start specifically for this kind of thing? I dont have to worry about the 3d printing side as someone in the group is familiar so I just need to actually make stuff.
Is there a general learning path that someone can spell out for me? Should I consider modeling vs sculpting?

Well first you need to uninstall Blender because it’s never designed for 3D printing, no matter what those crazy people say it is not going to work. Next install Vue from https://www.bentley.com/software/e-on-software-free-downloads/

Then easily create the landscape you want. Then print: https://mutter45.github.io/vue-create-print/en/

3D figures would be better off in Wings3D, faster than Blender and there’s enough real world tutorials for Wings3D.

im also a beginner and i cant say ive made anything to print yet, but i can share what little i know
the biggest hurdle with printing is knowing the resolution you can print at and making sure your minis have thick enough wrists and shafts and such to not immediately break. also supports, but you do 40k so you already have an idea about that im guessing.

the hard part of characters is rigging and weight painting, but its worth it to learn because you can just make one guy then pose them however you want. there's a great "rigging for impatient people" tutorial i refer to constantly, its like 5 mins and it covers basically everything

for terrain and buildings you probably want to learn geometry nodes unless you're down to spend hours copy-pasting roof tiles. modern tools are pretty good about fixing up meshes that arent perfectly enclosed, but its still something to keep in mind. the rest is just learning all the UI horseshit because blender's UI and hotkeys grew like a tumor and there's no rhyme or reason to any of them. snap to verticies and locking by axies are your friend, as is proportional editing. sculpting mode is less useful than you would think.

beware, it takes like 3 hours to even be able to use blender, you should try doing one of those doughnought tutorials
the most useful stuff to get you started would be
>modes
object mode moves things, edit changes their shape. some modes like pose mode are only available under certain conditions like when you click an armature in object mode or weight painting from a mesh
>N
lets you set exact positions of things globally or locally
>x/y/z
lock your movement to an axis, great with vertex snapping
>shift+(x/y/z)
lock to a plane, as above
>g,g,c
shift a vertex along a line and extend the line

blender can export as an STL

I use blender and it is ok to sculpt 32mm minis, yes you have better programs like zbrush, nomad is quite popular too, if you go with blender ArtisansofVaul has a couple of playlist on youtube that could be helpful.
> Should I consider modeling vs sculpting?
You should start with kitbashing, from there modeling / hard surface, blender has a couple of addons that can make your life easier, and after that sculpting, one of the things that lots of people skip is blocking and it is really important for sculpting.

/tg/ is the board, you have a 3dprinting thread there too

Blender can’t do 3D Printing without paid subscription plugins. Why do you people keep lying about stuff, you’re worst than the anime monster that tells little girls that all your wishes come true but never tells you the bad things.

Blender’s measurements are incorrect and has always caused problems: https://old.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/ri85l4/blender_measurements_are_way_off/

Do not believe the Blender community, use something else like Wings3D, Blockbench, Cheetah3D. Anything but the broken piece of shit that is Blender.

Yes, when you export in blender 1 blender unit = 1mm even if you see "scene metric unit scale 1", it is not a big deal since you can easily resize, you have to know that blender is not made for you, blender is made for the Blender Studio projects.
>B-but can I use it to sculpt minis?....
Yes you can, but you have to know the limitations of the program and how to work with it.

you can actually

i know its a bit and blendy does have its limitations, but still

Yes, I'm arguing in 4chan instead of finishing my models, I couldn't care less, lots of people hate blender for different reasons, he should have gone with f360 instead of wings, rhino or whatever.

No you idiots, the different 3D printing software does not allow Blender’s version of STL to work. It has to follow common instructions that Blender cannot provide. Also you give 2.7 Blender which will not work on 4.5, this is the type of crazy inexperienced Blendead you people have given to Blender community.

>Photo of the software clearly says it’s too large. You will lose details on model, the red is bad obviously outside the printing scale and Chitbox doesn’t keep sizes: https://docs.chitubox.com/

All you proven is how dumb you are at 3D printing.

this has to be the worst bait that I've seen here in years, yes my model has 45 pieces to fit that screen, it is made to print in several sessions or in a single one if your screen is big, I'm glad you noticed.
You are talking with 2 different people there btw.

You're going to want to use those settings if you're going to use Blender for 3D printing

Try this learning path https://youtu.be/-jeyKCwsm94
I recommend sculpting but I'm biased, also it's probably going to be two years of daily grind until you can make stuff that looks decent
Anonymous No.1015969 [Report]
Also the real pros? They use Zbrush+Tinkercad

You’re not supposed to cut figures or give them high details in their clothing. This is a you problem for over believing on 3D printing. We still don’t have the technology for high quality prints.

What the fuck do you expect 3D to do? It’s not built the same as if you were building it with wood or clay. Rules must be followed or waste a lot of print that I remind you cost in the hundreds.

All you did was post a badly printed preview with you telling us that it’s going to be sliced. No one does this anon, your opinion doesn’t matter when you’re too stupid to 3D print in smaller sizes and add the armor to the body. But no because actual 3D modeling is too hard.

Funny how a person is asking for advice and then immediately one schizophrenic faggot appears and shits up the entire thread with his dumb nonsense a out Blender and tries to prove a point by self replying with agreement to his own posts hating on Blender. What no life does to a mf.

You dumb mother fucker, there’s obviously a better faster way than just slicing a fully detailed figure but no because you don’t like the correct way and decide it’s wrong because someone called you out.
