Animation
Okay, so I see there's a lot of shit flinging on this board over these two programs, and the general conclusion is that Maya is better at animation and used in professional pipelines.

Can someone just explain to me in depth what makes Maya a better program for animation than Blender? I understand blender has it's strengths but I'm just curious about the animation angle. What tools does maya have that makes it superior for animation?

Both have their pros and cons. As far as I am aware, Maya has slightly better tools for animation, but I guess its just a preference issue. Blender was somewhat junky in the past when it came to rigging/animating, but has improved a lot and keeps improving.

As anons said before, choose whatever you like. Both a reasonable choices.

Personally I'd use Blender, because it's free, doesnt even require a registration/account whatsoever and I don't want to pirate any paid software like Maya. Also you will most likely do other 3D related tasks, and Blender can do anything from simulations and procedural generation to modelling and texturing etc.

>Blender can do anything
Stop lying, it can not script well enough, it’s not built for CAD related work, simulation is laggy and Blender’s foundation is stupid for not caring about compliance with other free software programs. Everything in Blender will never work with a product, you literally have to convert it to something that might break.

Nothing does out of the box. There are things you'd be surprised that Blender does better out of the box which you need a paid plugin to do in Maya. Maya is only better for animation because of proprietary tools that have been built for it by animation/effect houses with decades of development and pipeline integration.

As a regular user, you don't have access to any of these tools. At best you can buy some of the plugins or "industry" rigs.

The hype is mostly know-nothings that jerk off popular industry tools which is unfortunately common in creative fields. They can't objectively evaluate things, they just repeat whatever is used or they think is used by the industry. And when they try other tools, if it's any different than what the "industry" tool is, it's automatically bad because they will never spend the time to learn it.

Good animation is independent of the tools used to make it, so pick anything.

Wings3D is better and it doesn’t even have rigging. That how you know Blender is not good for anything.

The fact is maya is better not only in animation is better at everything then blender. Blender suck at everything and is a fact. Any 3d software is better then blender.

Blender
Modeling sucks and crash at hight poly and big scene
Uv mapping doesn't make sence and missing tools
Ui depend 100 % on shortcut and has no logic behind it cinema 4d as example has the same ui and it works.
Rendering and simulation crash with even the most powerful pc.
Rigging doesn't make sence.
Community toxic as fuck and love deflecting.

I have used both
At a base level they can do the same thing but Blender is more cumbersome and missing a lot of QoL features to streamline animating. I find that blender often got in the way of what I wanted to do because it's systems were outdated or simply didn't do what Maya could. A lot of what you want/need in the graph editor is paid add-ons for Blender but built into Maya by default. Any animator worth their salt will tell you that the Graph editor is the most important part and Blenders is just not quite there.

You can import DWG the universal file for CAD modeling. While Blender doesn’t support DWG. So yes in theory because Autodesk knew and was aware of CAD being used on Maya unlike Blender Foundation that has never implemented DWG.

Why are you such an insufferable cunt? Every thread in which Blender is being mentioned once, you start shitting up the entire thread with your bullshit copy-pastas, you don't contribute anything to the actual topic, you aren't being helpful whatsoever and instead you ruin the experience for everyone. Get fucking lost, you retarded loser.

>>1015998
So where do you get the DWG file from? lmao
Being able to import a file that was created with an external CAD tool doesn't turn Maya into a CAD software with CAD tools. But nice try doing your mental gymnastics. You are probably the same faggot loser as mentioned in the paragraph above this one - same mindset, same mentality, same retardation.

Anyhow, as anons mentioned before me, Maya and Blender are very similar at this point.
If you are a general user exploring and tinkering with 3D, not doing any high end production work whatsoever (which I assume, because otherwise you wouldn't ask this question), then Blender is definitely a good option. It provides you all the tools you need and also has a large library of free extensions accessible that can make certain tasks even easier.

You could also pirate Maya, which probably many do who are starting out. Though, I would not recommend it.

Whichever software you pick, the quality of your work is dependent on your experience and understanding of how 3D works, not necessarily the tools you use.

Different programs with different technical debts(they are both kind of old)

With different communities and plugins.

Professional studios have been using maya very long and they usually customized it to fit there needs with a bunch of plugins.

But maya apparently does have a better multi threaded animation system so it has better performance in previews. Also many people prefer the interface.

But a lot of it is "sunk cost" of animation studios.

They wouldn't just drop maya but also the plugins and software experience so they likely won't do it.

But blender is perfectly fine tool

it's dishonest, nobody is running around calling Maya a shit modeling software because it can't do CAD, so don't do that to Blender

Oh look, you got exposed again. Blender had years to implement this open source solution but they refused to add it. FreeCAD supported since the project was launched.

Fun thing: Blender CAN do CAD work. But get very used to using control planes and you will need to learn Geonodes. It's what me and my friends had to do for an extremely complex helmet project when Fusion 360 was simply not going to handle the abstract shapes that needed to be made.

Having said that, there has already been feature roadmaps specifically for doing CAD stuff in Blender. I don't know when they'll be here, but they specifically mentioned implementing proper NURBS and SDF workflows because of the significant interest in using it for CAD purposes.

the only thing i like better about blender is the sculpting in maya is so pointless idk why they even added that crap. now if autodesk had added mudbox functionality to maya, that would be insane, but as it stands maya sculpting sucks and mudbox is unmaintained. i'm not buying zbrush subscription when i had a perpetual license before maxon bought them.

Shut up anon, it’s obviously not designed to sculpt. The basic idea is to modify it a little, something that needs fixing or change. Since you couldn’t figure that out, it just means you can’t sculpt anything and making shit up like all you Blender cults do.

yeah i know ur just supposed to subdivide the shit out of one little patch and sculpt the shit out of it and then maybe remesh it, but what i'm saying is autodesk owns mudbox which is smooth as clay or butter or whatever, and they're not maintaining it, the macos version has some bug with the command key forever, so why not integrate that into maya? if i remember correctly c4d had descent sculpting and that was years before they bought zbrush.
