mathemathically or draftingly speaking, how do you suppose to, redraw an object in another angle, or direction, maybe based on a single ,2d image of said object? basically like turntable but maybe more, back to basic, like in the age of akira or whatnot.

Artists usually have references from different angles to help. If you’re talking about how they imagined it then i guess seeing examples of real world and putting together an image of what you want it to be. Lets take the image of the mecha, its a human sized object which a human can fit and control as a human. If you added real world mechanics that would work if we had better technology you can now imagine a basic concept of the mecha. Still basic isn’t something people like to see so add extra features in the mecha like their heads, give it equipment, a story and color. That’s how one would think of building a mecha.

Lots of work goes into building the reference sheet, that way it can be drawn consistently over and over again.

Put it this way, it's not exactly tracing but it's like getting as close to tracing that you can possibly get without actually tracing.

Not because tracing isn't effective but because it's too inflexible.

Just don't fall into the trap that it's all a magicians trick.

it s not more so of a mecha, but really about the prewritten, predefined idea of the subject, or perhaps just jump right into the angles or direction it is turned or seen from, how does "correctness" of an image then, is considered from the original, 2d picture of it? perhaps seeing from 3dcg pOV of sorts....

Artist imagine things a lot, the first mechas were build around the WW2 war machines. Those small details were added together to form mecha that you see. There’s no good way to describe how one would imagine a WW2 machine turning into something from 1000 years into the future. Every artist thinks differently (which is why many mecha exist) and each person draws inspiration for it.

Just because you draw something *once* doesn't mean you throw it away.

Use standard perspective drawing to drop in a few boxes, cylinders and primitives that are drawn correctly to spec and then start filling in the blanks with these volumes constraining and informing you about the extent of the geometry in that space and how elements are to be aligned spatially. Just google how to draw mecha and there will be tons of info setting you on the right path.

2D also uses 3D techniques, depth, orientation, shadows, lighting, color. All were done in 2D before any of us were born. You really need to imagine the mecha, imagine someone drawing it as a cartoon and do the exact thing.

i can imagine subjects like zaku and its octopus face but it dont work when drawn just slightly and i wonder if this is due to specific issue like matrices to things which will make it actually solvable
