Nanachi is currently suffering to finally transcend her guilt over helping Bondrewd with his experiments.

The entire thematic throughline of the series is about what you're willing to sacrifice or suffer through to get what you want: Will you risk life and limb to explore deeper into the Abyss? Will you endure horrible and painful curses to bring back treasures and secret knowledge? Will you give up life on the surface to discover the mysteries of the netherworld's bottom? Will you sacrifice those around you for your own ends? Or will you sacrifice yourself for others? And so on.

The entire basis of dramatic catharsis, going back to the time of Aristotle, is rooted in the nobility of suffering and in seeing the arrogant, vain, or villainous succumb to it and the selfless, decent, and heroic overcome it.

Much better and I agree with you. The first time I saw episode 13 of season 1, from the start of Nanachi's backstory to Mitty's farewell I had the most intense emotional response to media that I'd ever had. Saying I teared up would not be accurate, I was crying through it. The scenes that follow, cooking for Nanachi and then the bath scene were exactly what I needed to recover from that amd wash the tears away. It was like a rollercoaster of profound sadness to profound tenderness and joy. Tsukushi has managed to deliver these intense feelings of devastation and catharsis over and over again with Prushka and whole village arc.

To me it feels like volume 11 and 12 were and extended period of downtime that was meant to help us recover from the emotional devestation delivered in the village arc and with volume 13 things have begun to get tough again. But we've already seen it in small doses, like Nanachi's peril being followed up by her drunken clingyness.

It's one of my favorite things about made in abyss. The way in which it hurts me and also brings me joy really goes to show how much Tsukushi can make you care about characters and their journey.
