Denji isn’t just stupid—he’s a walking miscarriage of morality who shouldn’t even exist. Every single neuron in his pea-sized, maggot-infested brain is dedicated to the single-minded pursuit of instant gratification, no matter the cost. A toddler has more self-control than this absolute fucking degenerate - he let Nayuta die so he could go fuck whores instead.

Just him wallowing in his own filth, chasing after whatever fleeting dopamine hit will momentarily distract him from the fact that he is, fundamentally, a waste of oxygen. There are cockroaches with more of a sense of responsibility than this guy. If you gave a literal tapeworm the ability to talk, it would still have more empathy and self-awareness than Denji.

This revolting, fungus-infested waste of skin has no morals, no integrity, and not even the most basic concept of what it means to be a decent human being. He is the villain of his own story, and only brings misery to himself and everyone around him. Denji deserves every single ounce of suffering that comes his way. When he finally meets his inevitable, gruesome end, it won’t be a tragedy. It won’t be sad. It will be justice.

When you abandon the one person who actually needed you, just so you could chase your own pathetic, brainless urges, you are not a victim. You are not misunderstood. You are beyond redemption.

I don't think people are reading the volume sales "right", it's really the strength of the previous volume's content that determines the sales of the next volume. Not so much the volume's content in itself.
So while people liked the initial setting with Asa, Yoru, Yoshida and Denji, and were eager to buy the next volume, they didn't seem to enjoy Yuko much, and that's when the sales started dropping by the next volume.
Nayuta's death in vol 19 was probably also responsible for vol 20 drop, as the story lost all of its potential "wholesome" elements, and became pretty much just this bleak, downward spiral of Denji and Asa, without any support characters around to bring levity to the situation.

Asa will be in focus for around 2 arcs, so around 20ish chapters, then Denji returns to focus and has remained so to this day.

You can hardly call Asa "main character" currently, although I don't blame people who thought so, she is given an amount of focus that is completely unprecedented to any other character in the maga, she has countless parallels with Denji, particularly his part 1 self and she is even referred to as "Chainsaw Woman".
But after focus shifted away from her, her presence on the manga has only diminished since, currently she is completely absent for several chapters despite being technically present via sharing a body with Yoru.

Denji is still present through out the "Asa parts" of the manga and she still has one arc that focuses mostly on her before Denji "returns for real".

Asa remains relevant (in theory at least) because she is the centerpiece to what is currently expected to be the big bad of the story and still has a big chekov's gun the the form of a prophetic dream, much like Denji did with his door dream in part 1, assuming the manga doesn't shit itself further, that is.

The problem of Part 2 is that everything else is trash, and Denji doesn't have a single character that could make for fun interactions with.
There was some potential in Nayuta, but she was only in the story to cockblock him then die, there was never an arc focused on them properly.
The character that more or less replaces Aki is Asa, she even gets plenty of interactions with characters that barely talked to Denji like Death, Yuko and Yoru up until recently.

I think Denji is a victim of Part 2's problems, not the cause behind them. I agree that Denji doesn't work by himself, i'd say he's more of a reactive character more than a passive one, like action heroes usually are, but his opposition just isn't interesting enough (Asa is also a reactive character, but she is hogtied to Yoru who is an active character).

Asa is the character that suffers the most from Part 2's wobbly pacing. Every single arc of Part 1 had meanigful tangible developments for both Denji and Aki's characters, meanwhile Asa up until 5 chapters ago was stuck as the exact same she was at the end of falling/church. And her absence is just infuriating at this point.

I hear some people say that "Asa's absence is to develop Yoru's character", but I don't know why Yoru's character can only be developed in Asa's absence, in fact, the most interesting interaction Yoru has currently is WITH Asa.
