Kuzushiro has been in the industry since the 2000s, so it's really not like this, she didn't have much of an option but work in other genres if she wanted to make money, it's either that or work another job which isn't related to manga, she choose to be manga artist full time.
People forget that YH used to only have 4 issues a year and then 6 issues and other magazines were also very similar, it just wasn't a viable career until stuff like Yuru Yuri showed up.
And guess what, after she burned bridges with Ichinijsha, she pretty much had no place to publish yuri anymore, unless she went for another CGDCT on kirara (which was specifically the reason she fought with YH in the first place), so she had to wait a few years for the industry to start taking yuri publishing seriously in other places.
Nakatani has a success out of the gate and they probably told her if she could do this with a yuri series she would be able to do much more with other genres, but the truth is that she wasn't a good sci fi writer.
