Thanks for reading. I do so love it when authors take non-obviously ambiguous phrases from hundreds of chapters ago and reinterpret them in significant ways... Good thing all the chapters were DMCA'd, so I don't have to bother going back to change anything.

Is Mao worth getting into or has Rumiko lost her touch in her old age? I thought Rinne was boring for what it’s worth.

One positive thing I can say about this nu-Rumiko is that at least her self-inserts no longer seem to be raging tsundere bitches.

For the first eight volumes or so, it's a fairly tightly paced mystery/horror story. After that it starts getting a little more filler-y with Rumiko indulging herself in small horror vignettes while the main plot only pops back up sporadically. I think the central mystery is pretty compelling and well structured, although it gets a bit difficult to keep track of as the series progresses (not because it's particularly complex or anything, but because you just forget what has happened due to the aforementioned shift in pacing). The characters are all a bit on the dry side, but I like their interactions and the wry humor. Then again, I also think Rinne is hilarious. The tone is overall less lighthearted and more dour than Inuyasha's. The art is basically what you see in this chapter, continuing the downward trend from Inuyasha in my opinion.
I'd say it's worth checking out if you enjoy her horror-oriented works like Inuyasha or Mermaid Saga, and don't mind the art being a little stiff and the tone being a little dry. You can pick up on a fair amount of answers to the mysteries if you're paying attention.

My guess would be "probably zero". Rumiko doesn't do that many recommendations, after all. I didn't see any Mao-related art on the Mamono no Kuni author's twitter, either.

mao and kamon are there, daigo's still recovering from the poisoning
maybe he doesn't expect mao to try to hurt him, but kamon doesn't have that level of attachment to him
but daigo also sealed that spear such that he needs mao to help unseal it, and what he's saying could move mao to not help him at the least
he says he doesn't want the kou clan as much as he wanted to back then, but how much less are we talking about here? does he barely care anymore?

i think mao himself has the most shirtless/nude scenes among the disciples

Well, it has quite a few episodes, so I thought it might have a substantial plot. I have never read Ranma or anything else by the mangaka, I only discovered who the author was after reading a few episodes. I like stories about the occult and mythology, and the fact that isn't just another shounen battle comic is a plus. Mightily impressed so far!
