I think Mao keeps a fairly brisk pace up to volume 8 or so. After that it starts getting slower with a lot of short one-off arcs, which will probably have an effect on reader retention.

I feel like they're doing a bit of something which I've often thought the anime adaptation should do, which is that the different time periods have different color palettes. Although most of that is probably just down to the time of day in each shot.
