"Question 4. (June 4, 2021)

Please tell me if there is a book that Rumiko-sensei read recently that was interesting! Also if you have a recommending book for junior high school and high school students, I would be very happy if you could tell me!
Rumiko Takahashi:

It’s quite difficult to recommend a book to people. Because I want you to think it’s interesting. It’s not a recent work but I recommend Jiro Asada sensei’s Soukyuu no Subaru (蒼穹の昴). Also the work of Agatha Christie. When I am addicted to one work, I have a habit of reading the work by the author from the beginning. During the holidays before the MAO series I went to the Agatha Christie shelf in the bookstore, bought and read, and repeated everyday. And I finished reading almost all her works. I’m glad that it was very interesting and I learned how to make mysteries."

No, the setup is similar but it's much less of an adventure shonen and way more of a mystery series with some action. There's a large-scale mystery that ties all the characters together and is slowly unraveled while allegiances and conflicts are formed and shift.

It's tonally very different from Inuyasha. There's no adventure or an overarching villain like Naraku. Not many emotional outbursts or hot-blooded fights. The characters try to live their lives while slowly working towards untangling the core mystery. It's just that some of them are basically career gangsters, which is usually where the conflict comes from. The violence and other negative aspects of the Taisho era get treated in a very matter-of-fact way. There's a sort of callous undercurrent to the whole series: you can do good things, but the world can be pretty awful, so don't get too worked up about it.

The plot does involve a girl traveling to a past period and meets a sword user, yet:

Inuyasha’s group is of 6 characters always traveling together, Mao’s group is of only 3 which in fact is like Rinne's group of Kyoukai no Rinne (a boy not rude running an honest business with his little servant and a female companion), and their allies appear on and then.

2. It features demons, yet most of the major characters are humans. There are between 20 and 30 significant characters so far, and only 2 of them are demons, and some of them are like the Black Cats of Kyoukai no Rinne.

3. Unlike the mystery of Inuyasha and Kikyo's tragic past which was quickly uncovered, the pieces of the puzzle of the past in Mao are slowly coming together and even after more than 150 chapters, not everything has been uncovered.

4. In Inuyasha, despite regularly coming across Inuyasha’s group and Naraku and some of his incarnations, Sesshomaru, Kikyo and Koga rarely crossed paths (Sesshomaru and Koga in fact never cross paths in the manga (ep99 was a filler episode, and it’s probably the cause)). In Mao, the handling of the major characters crossing paths seems better.

And that's not all, I just don't want to spoil too much. You might see few things that could remind you of Inuyasha, yet you have to see it until its most recent chapter to see for yourself if it's exactly like Inuyasha.

Why are Rumiko's tankobon releases always so behind the magazine chapters anyway? She doesn't even do volume extras. Do the volume releases just start very late or do they gradually lose ground over the magazine? I've always noticed it but never checked why.
Anonymous No.280601687 [Report]
>>280601264
Looking at the list of volumes on Wikipedia, there's usually a 2-4 month gap between releases. If the gap is longer than ten weeks, which it often is, the volume releases fall slightly behind the magazine, and that effect accumulates as the series goes on. When the first volume came out I think it was only about 10 chapters behind.
