I think the mangaka failed two things (at least).
1. soccer is not an appealing sport for a new sports title. if the sport is going to be the focus instead of the background. like how baseball being fucked up is a useful setting for framing the real story of Days of Diamond, which is much more psychological. the author either isnt all that interested in soccer or doesnt have much to say. this whole match has been magic from rubix man and from Takami. nothing to say about soccer, whereas haikyuu has plenty to say about volleyball.
2. Character writing. he failed to make multiple interesting characteers. and if you wanted the growth to be about the protag, then he's come too far too fast.

The only way to save embers, is to make Haitani not the protag. like if you moved the story to follow the rubix cube guy. thematically his 'embers', his smoldering interest and motivation in anything, being reignited by haitani. who himself had his fire started earlier. or mr Bend who had his 'embers' fueled by haitani. turn it into a manga about rediscovering failing passion. various stories roughly interconnected, not not. but rubix cube guy doesnt seem interesting enough for that. i think its over.
