He was suicidal from the start. He didn't believe he deserved to live because he had already died once and then still failed to save Ai.
He was scared of losing Ruby too so he decided Kamiki had to die before getting another chance to kill her.
Although he did love Kana (and Akane) his self-loathing caused him to believe his relationship with them was a selfish one and that he was only 'manipulating' them

That's one of the big problems. Aka wrote at least two other means Aqua had at his disposal to put the brakes on Kamiki without putting anyone else at risk (the movie, and Nino's confession), then tried to play off the murder suicide as the only solution. It wouldn't even take much to fix this. Nino evades capture or commits suicide before confessing. Kamiki uses his position as one of the movie's sponsors to block its release. Now Kamiki is actually a threat where direct action against him makes sense.

I think Aka chickened out on confirming Aqua was suicidal, despite clearly setting it up. Akane has that whole spiel about Aqua 'wanting to live', and while it's always possible that's she wrong, her ability to read people is ridiculously accurate on almost every other occasion.

The problem with the series is it spends too much time on waifufagging, romance, and all that crap instead of entirely focusing on Aqua and his revenge. It's probably a combination of Aka being a hack (dragging the series + adding more romance for financial gains) and Mengo and the editor not liking the OG darker draft.

And Aka just doesn't want to admit that he's better as a slop writer than a serious one. He keeps adding muh social commentary, muh revenge drama, and so on in his manga.

Aka flirts with a bunch of different ideas and themes, but never explores them in any real depth. If I had to pick one, I'd say 'fans don't properly understand the people they idolize', encapsulated in Aqua killing himself to save Ruby's idol career when she'd give it up to keep him around.

Aka got inspired by Mengo's story and wanted to do his own version.
However, Aka does not write using a manuscript. He just writes whatever he feels like at the time. That's great for him because it's way less work and way less stress.
Too bad it ends up meaning you get a bunch of broken plot lines. Not to mention things like creating Kana only because he didn't want Ruby being overly comedic. Only to then just make her a silly bitch anyway and thus leaving Kana as an extremely awkward character in the story when it's time to wrap things up.

Mengo's oneshot of the brother giving his lifespan to his idol sister was stupid too but mad sense in a self-consistent sort of way where it could be understood that the brother was suicidal over not being able to be with his sister and coming to the conclusion that this meant he was a detriment to her life and idol career. Aka chickened out of giving Aqua a comparable motivation.

I think the telling thing is that so many readers point to Tokyo Blade as the best arc, when it's largely removed from the overarching revenge plot beyond introducing Taiki (who then gets treated as a gag character anyway).
