if you've already seen all the essentials then everything in your backlog is exactly as bad as everything currently airing, and the newer stuff tends to be of higher quality due to simple technological progress

newer stuff might be technically more advanced but restriction breeds creativity and the particular failures of today aren't like those of yesterday either, plus the percentage of dreadful seasonal filler is probably higher overall now (~95% --> 97%, which doesn't seem like a big shift but really is)
so you can often find very different hidden gems if you dig backward
and then there's the test of time which does lots of filtering for you and thus makes good old stuff more efficient to find

I wouldn't discourage anyone from watching films like 'The Room' or 'Troll 2' if they know what they're going to get. Why should we treat anime any different? We should able to watch Ex-Arm because it's funny to shit on bad media, and we should be able to enjoy it for existing.

This can become an issue in and of itself in that you start perpetually looking for the needle in the haystack that you're absolutely certain you'll enjoy.
Sometimes you gotta just sit down and shovel some shit in your mouth and it might just turn out to be gold instead, or at least something servicable. The real advice to take is to never watch seasonally so you can bang out your 3-episode rule in an hour and call it a day if it sucks instead of 3 whole weeks of investment.
