I think it's just down to how well you take 'newtype bullshit' during the end of every 'mainline' series. 0079 was at least, "grounded", low level psychics have improbable aim at long distances, can sense each other, empathic communication and emit a wave (on some spectrum) that instrumentation can detect and make use of.
