What do you think about the Cardcaptor Sakura movies?
Have you seen the Cardcaptor Sakura movies at the right time in the anime series?
I think most people only remember the airplane Sakura feet scene and the shark scene from the first movie, so the second movie is the fan favorite, and it was much more enjoyable for the adult males in the cinema audiences who brought their little girls with them to watch the movie.

I haven't even known about the movies when I watched the anime as a little girl.

The first movie is basically just an episode of the show scaled-up accordingly with budget, which isn't a bad thing. The second movie feels like it was properly planned from the start as both a movie and a conclusion, love the song they use at the end.

I feel like CCS is one of those shows like The Powerpuff Girls or Sailor Moon where it actually had a fair amount of boys watching it. Putting those shows in after-school programming blocks that featured action and adventure stuff probably helped. The 1990's Toonami run of Sailor Moon and the 2000's run of Cardcaptor Sakura's Spanish dub in Latin America both rightly placed them in timeslots that were after-school and that put them alongside shit like Batman and Dragon Ball Z.

Oh boy. Not only did they change the tone of the series substantially by removing the original OST, they arguably misunderstood the genre entirely and tried to make Syaoran the deuteragonist.

The dub version (let me just add, real fast here, that saying "suh-COOR-uh" should be slappable) removes all sense of wonder and triumph and heroism from the scene, and it removes everything that happens subconsciously when you play a character's leimotif. This is Sakura's moment. She's fucking FLYING, dude. She's actually doing the thing. That shot of the city from way up in the air from her POV is supposed to inspire awe and "WOW" as much as terror and peril.
Take the problem present there, and understand that they did it to the whole show. It wasn't Cardcaptor Sakura.

The movies are some of my favorite anime movies. And the reason I hate Clear Card so much, for retconning movie 2 (and being terrible in and of itself).

A number of scenes in the first CCS movie used rotoscoping/live actors. They did it the right way and not the shitty Disney/Don Bluth way. But the point is, they probably were using live actors for inspiration. And that's how they noticed little details like arm fat and head turns. I'm always the most impressed by this one scene with Tomoyo in particular.

But I agree. It's actually very impressive how there's little subtle changes to Sakura's design as she ages in season 2 and 3.

Clow and his family are not the only people in the world who have magic. It's stated in the plot (through Kero chan and Yue) that Clow just created his own brand of magic. And Sakura became the inheritor of that magic. This is why Li is initially so upset. Since being a direct descendant, he felt like he was suppose to inherit it.

Also, I can't remember the exact episode, but there's the whole thing where they reveal that Sakura felt all lovey-dovey towards Yukito both because of his moon magic but also because he reminded her of her dad. And Eriol says there's a reason for that, though he doesn't elaborate. This is implying her dad has some connection to Clow.

I'm currently rewatching it myself right now. On episode 31. Some episodes are even better than I remember. Others are a little slow, but still fun. The biggest thing is they retain the tone and slice of life that made them good.

Only real difference I see since watching them years ago is that the situations with the cards are so over-the-top at times. But it doesn't really matter since the cards are the B plot.

This anime needed a REAL villain. Realistically, it had no villainous villain. Only "i was just testing you" villains.

Syaoran kind of ruins the show for me because I always get really annoyed when there's a robust power system in a series that the MC never bothers to learn or use because of their unique plot-related snowflake bullshit. It's like Kido in Bleach, Ninjutsu besides Shadow Clone and Rasengan in Naruto, exorcist magic in Ushio to Tora, etc.

Without Syaoran there would be enough distance from real magic users for it to make sense that Sakura just uses the Clow Cards and her little wand to become a magical girl in the city, but with Syaoran it just bothered my autism too much that Sakura never made any effort to learn any real spells. Even a couple small cantrips would have sufficed.
