There was once the Original Creator, a godlike eldritch abomination among godlike eldritch abominations. He created the universe by the virtue of becoming it, and himself being everything.
And then he split apart (actually, he did that multiple times, but don't worry about it). His different pieces fulfil different roles, roughly grouped into different pathways. There are 22 pathways (actually more, but don't worry about it). Each pathway has steps starting from 9 all the way up.
To gain power, you need to gather specific materials fitting the right sequence and brew them in the right order to create a potion. You then drink that potion. If you failed somewhere in the process or were in the wrong state of mind, the remnant of the Original Creator inside the resulting potion will overwhelm you and turn you into a mindless abomination.
Even if you succeed and choose to not advance afterwards, this can still happen if you lose control over yourself. To prevent that, you trick the remnant of the Original Creator by pretending to be it, acting in accordance to the name of the sequence. If your sequence was named “Seer”, you go and play pretend at being a seer, telling people their future in the dark alley and so on.
The further you go up the sequence, the more powers you get. And as names change, you act as different things while advancing, building an entire philosophy according to the chosen pathway - and also slowly shedding your humanity.
You keep brewing potions to advance in sequence, and each time the risk increases. The difficulty of acquiring materials and finding out what you even need to go up increases. There start to appear supplementary rituals of insane difficulty you need to carry out to lower the risk.
But if you go far enough, you become a god. And barely different from an eldritch horror in the end.

At the start it's honestly really good, Book 2 of CoI might be my single favorite book from both LoTM and CoI, seeing the residents of the motel slowly break down while Lumian builds himself back up is some of the best character writing the series has. S1 was indeed pretty good, but the S2 show that the writer (who's also the director) aren't good with long arcs that spans the whole season.
S3 was kind of a mix of both (it's episodic and there's an overarching plot) but leans more on S1 style which is just great.

Wasn't a big fan of the first episode. Felt like it tried too hard. The flash forward, the pace, trying to create too grandiose of scenes.

Second episode was better. Slower, less disjointed. I felt like Dunn's famed motto wasn't as impactfully done as it should have been but the after credit scene's mundanity and humanity was good.

Overall It's a bit of a mixed bag but mostly positive. I'm glad it's not a standard half hour duration. The Chinese is grating, and the subtitles bleh, but I won't hold it against it. I read the original novel, and I don't like donghua much for now. Skipping the worldbuilding can be excusable, but the vibe is just off.
For me, Lord of Mysteries at its core about getting you to care about the mysteries of the setting. It's a slow, often introspective story that relies heavily on Klein as a character. The primary driver of the story is a slow drip feed of reveals, and further mysteries it creates. You can't create that when you cut out the basic information about the setting.
The first episode's pace is just awful, it's going at breakneck pace and throwing "epic" moments every few minutes when they aren't warranted. The second episode is somewhat better but not by much, it still doesn't explain much and just seems to be going through the motions. Like it's thinking that if it does every major scene and makes it look epic, it will be good, whereas those scenes are only epic in hindsight in novel.
I don't like how it cut out most of the internal monologue of Klein during the first Tarot Club meeting. Him pretending to be a god is both a major establishing character moment and sets up his future dynamic with the club.
I don't like how they skipped explanation of what Spectator and Seer potions actually do. Seer in particular should be fucking well established since it's Klein's tools to survive through all the bullshit he will go through.
I usually try not to be a highstanding novel reader screaming about how minor details are off, but I just feel like they lost the atmosphere for me. It shouldn't be tense "oh god a monster is chasing me" vibe, it should be creeping dread where you don't know if a monster will show up or not. It shouldn't be them throwing a sentence on you and asking you to remember, it should be well-established mundane setting and completely mystery in Beyonder shit, where every scrap of information feels like a breath of fresh air.

There's a lot of visual references that are great and make it a good adaptation. It's not just reading out the script of the novel word for word and making frames out of it.
Things like the clown handing out fliers, and the translucent quill floating around are things you'll only understand when you've finished volume 1.

Most surprisingly is actually the CGI implementation. There's quite a bit of it but I genuinely don't mind it, and I think that's BECAUSE there's so much of it.
If it was a single 3D model dropped onto a 2D plane it would looking jarring and out of place, but with a lot of it in each scene it actually blends quite nicely with the high quality 2D imagery they've got and I'm looking forward to see how they utilize it for some of the crazier visuals coming up.

Lesser, but still fair. I believe part of the adaptation process is trimming down what you can, and keeping what you must, while rearranging things so it's coherent. If that means cutting out the 100 copper = 10 silver = 1 gold, or Klein collecting paychecks for paperwork in blackthorn then all I can say is "I understand"
