What draws you to that work? I don't know anything about it but looking at the date of publication you might want to make sure you find a modernized one that uses pinyin romanization instead of the older, less accurate Wade-Giles.

I like their hieroglyphics. Some of them are literal drawings of things that they've been drawing in a similar fashion for thousands of years and I think that's kind of charming. Tonal languages are an abomination however.

My suspicion is that this has to do with the Cultural Revolution gutting traditional Chinese virtues and creating a scenario where a criminal class was by definition the only class of capitalists for a number of years, giving bad actors a head start when they eventually liberalized their economy.
