The plan mainly worked because she knew her mom is a spiteful bitch but she herself doesn't want to deliver the coup de grace. So she gave her mom a "choice". If her mom still had a tiny little bit of conscience, then the gun wouldn't matter. If the mom was truly beyond salvation, then she's the one who 'chose' it.
