a bunch of games ether died or got massively unpopular, specifically in na and western europe in 2012-2013, which coincided with leagues mega boom. And like any game of it's type mmo or moba if all your friends play one that's the one your playing. In those years literally everyone i knew that played league came from runescape dying,wow dying, or guild wars or some other type. They were mostly high level people in those games and just had to find something else to play and that was the shit at the time. To say the least that is in no way the current state of the playerbase, it's basically just overwatch v2 where they play for everything but the game play, one of my friends in 2016 had spent about 9k usd on getting all skins+ other shit at the time and solely played arams which makes turbo look complicated.
The death of the decent competivie games in the 2010s is such a collossal cancer to this day because most people are just settling on something they don't even give a shit about but is the least bad option. Dota is included in that, i mean you can't even play on anything below 170 ping if your west coast of na unless you want 2 hour long queues of people calling u a gringo everytime they die
