It's kind of hard to defend not doing full sfx redraws when you're three guys working on something.

I just didn't translate sfxs.
Did a translation today for a group where I also just skipped translating the sfx. The group doesn't care though.
I'm still fairly new at it and have to look up a lot of the sfxs, so it takes a lot of time honestly. Mostly use jaded network and chatgpt, but sometimes I just guess.

There's a Gachimuchi reference in a series I'm working on (a character calls another character "ゆがみねーなてめーも" for trying to flirt with the MC.)
Should I translate this in a way that incorporates the English version of the reference ("you got me mad now"), or try to translate the intended message behind the phrase, which I'm guessing is either something like "you're really something yourself" or "stop being a perv"?

You could easily find answer with one simple search.
>If you’re on Photoshop CC you can apply multiple strokes right from the Layer Style window, but if you’re using an older version, you can use almost any Layer Style effect to give you a stroke.

>Here’s how you can get 7 strokes from one layer:

>Bevel and Emboss: Change Technique to Chisel Hard, Angle to 0˚, Altitude to 90˚, Depth to 1000%, Highlight and Shadow mode to the same color. By changing the size you can set the width of the stroke and changing style to Inner/Outer bevel will change the orientation of the stroke.
>Stroke: You can actually get 2 strokes from this one (or more!). For fill type enter Gradient, for Style choose Shape burst. Enter 2 colors with a location of 50% on both. Then choose your stroke width.
>Inner Shadow: Choke to 100%, Size will change the width of the inner shadow.
>Inner Glow: Choke to 100%, changing Size will give the inner stroke.
>Outer Glow: Spread to 100%, Size will change outer stroke.
>Drop Shadow: Spread to 100%, then changing Size will give you an outer stroke.

I used CS6 for a long while, but switched to CC15. Especially the improved content aware fill helps a lot. It's not a lot harder to install, you just need to add some lines to the hosts file in the windows folder, and to do that you need to open notepad as an administrator and just open the file.

I genuinely don't understand why you even bother scanlating when you can't even clean properly. Like do you even want people to read what you make? Because that's so disturbing that you're going to make a lot of people not read your scanlations because your work is so terrible.
Honestly I'm curious if you're just a troll that doesn't want people to read your scanlations in the first place.
Like why do you even care about the translations being correct when you make the whole thing practically unreadable? The translation is the least of your concern. Nobody is going to read them anyway because you've already turned them away with your subpar work.

For anyone who cares, it looks like mangadex has gotten fake dmca takedowns. They just removed one from She's Likely Aiming At My Older Brother apparently. Which sort of makes sense since it's hakusensha which haven't dmcad any other titles afaik, and that just started couple of months ago, all of the other titles hit were older titles.
Though why someone is sending fake dmca take downs is beyond me. Only one I could think of doing something like that is honestly bentoki. But then again he's mentally ill.

Jesus Christ, by replying but not noting the blatant, obvious mistake each time, you just show how bad your Japanese is

>>280044251
Yes, it's “そして” that's completely misinterpreted here. “もしよかったら” to “Would you please ...” is honestly completely fine but “but then came the wall-slam” betrays that the translator, and all you people, clearly didn't understand that “そして” here just connects two nouns. It just means “What I wanted was love, as well as a wall-slam”.

Like... you did all know this right? It's not actually the case that the entire scanlation community is actually this bad at Japanese right?

>>280042275
Actually, this is the first title I did it because it's genuinely not redrawable since like 70% of the bubbles in it are semi-transparent and people said they liked it so I started doing it in other titles after that.

But you don't understand know, you can't possibly fathom that not everyone likes what you like, which is why you'll be a virgin till the end of time.

Anon, I was literally around the 30th most popular translator on Bato.to before I got banned. Apparently many people don't care or care negatively and the reason I do it is so that you can verify and compare it with the original text since as you can /blatantly/ once again see in this thread. The overwhelming majority of scanlators has absolutely /shit/ Japanese and the average scanlation is full of mistakes and they're /hoping/ that no one is going to ever look at the source material and see just how much they're purely guessing things together. I'm not going to hide anything.

Not really. The そして is wrong but you completely ignored the もしよかったら. I'd honestly assume you just didn't even see it rather than assume you thought what you put was okay. If it was just an issue of not being able to fit an even softer more passive sentence on the note that would also be forgivable, but don't act like it's a good translation.

Not really, I very much remember my thoughts back then and that “Please go out with me if you're fine with it” sounded awkward as a literal translation so I used “Would you please go out with me”.
Japanese people use “よかったら” and “よければ” all the time where a literal translation sounds a bit weird in English so you'd just use “please” or “would” to provide a similar thing in English like “良ければ、一緒に食べましょう?” which really shouldn't become “Let's go eat together if you're fine with it?” but “Would you like to go eat something together?”

The obvious big mistake is obviously the “そして” which is just completely and utterly wrong and turns the entire grammatical structure of the sentence upside down. Not noticing that just indicates bad Japanese which pretty much everyone here has, that much is obvious.

Yeah you fucked up in two ways, one was so obvious you noticed it and the other was so subtle that even now you don't get it. Go work on your English a little more and mabye you'll be able to come up with a translation for that line that doesn't sound as awkward as the one you think I'm saying you should've used but that also isn't almost completely interchangeable with a normal ください request. No, I honestly think in most cases people being against it comes from a place of being purists and thinking anything but the OG JP SFX is altering the original artistic intent

And sometimes, I even think that idea has merit, some panels use the SFX as a visual part of the composition and changing it to an english character can mess with that, but like 99% of the time there's no harm in redrawing it if you have the time and resources

Almost every single SFX nowadays is made by an assistant or an editor using stock PNGs. Let's not pretend otherwise.
And the same exact style and feeling of the SFX can be replicated with a modicum of skill.
Of course, if your idea of making an SFX is using Crash Landing BB Regular and maybe deforming it a little, then don't bother.

It's all about plastering your fake weebland culture over genuine Japanese fiction and calling it good. Most scanlators do not have Japanese of the level where they can even perceive any original intent.

To be fair, that's just an honest mistake, a mistake that indicates poor Japanese but an honest mistake. But when they're seriously letting Japanese characters say “anime” and “manga” it's just knowingly injecting your own weebland culture into original Japanese fiction. Even people who never studied any Japanese should know that “アニメ” does not mean “anime”.

Translating “ジャパニメーション” is probably fine though, but I've honestly never seen that word in the wild despite it being in the dictionary which should indicate that Japanese people just don't talk about that.

I've just used the standard lama model, works fine for me. It's not great on screen tones, but neither is photostop generative fill afaik, so you'll have to do content aware fill and conventional redrawing for that. but for mostly anything else it's a breeze

the translator is the hardest person in the team to get. I'd probably just find some manga you like that you'd like to translate that hasn't got translations going on, and just either start on it yourself as a solo scanlator and recruiting for typesetters and cleaners in the credits, or you could try hiring cleaner/typesetters in the mangadex forums or somewhere else
it's not especially hard to learn how to redraw or typeset, and it's probably nice to learn the basics anyway

Or do you cognitively notice but simply don't “feel” it so it doesn't feel like a loss to you to omit it?
Or do you even “feel” it and feel like the translation really misses a lot of the intent behind the original and what kind of character it attempts to portray but do you either lack the ability to communicate it in English, or do you just know that the virgins in the comment section are going to get angry because “Muh cute loli speaks like an old bearded king, what was the translator thinking? N2 is shit; N1 is shit.
Seriously, N2 is basically the point where your Japanese first becomes remotely functional, as in you can actually do something with it without it being studying and N1 is where, provided your output be as good as your input, which it often isn't, you're actually conversational, as in you can talk, you can express your views.

However to be an actual translator in theory you need more. It's literally your job to know both languages /well/ in theory. You should know all the subtle nuances and differences in what meaning different expressions impart and N1 speakers just don't. It's like a concert pianist who's at the point where he can play some tunes here and there, no your job is to be /really/ good at the Piano.

JLPT itself says that N1 maps to B2; that's my impression too and it's basically “you can have a decent conversation and express yourself” level, not “You know the ins and outs of all the subtleties of Japanese.

>>280057127
Truth. People just get less interested in it the better they become or go professional. If you're good at something, why do it for free? Professional translators are all freelancers anyway so you could spend all that time at least getting some money for it. You get what you pay for with free translations and even professional translations often read like they're made by N2-N1 people, not “Wooow, this perso is an absolute master of both Japanese and translating, every time I'm amazing how the translator managed to capture the fine nuance of this expression with something and oh my god, this is so close to the original.”-tier stuff.

Professional translators are also insanely liberal to mask how much they don't understand and how much they're guessing. Once in a while there's a really big mistake which really shows that it's not “artistic licence” but just “guesslations”.

So, what are the best place(s) to upload chapters to nowadays?
I decided to take a break after the mangadex DMCA fiasco when my series was hit (all but the latest chapter which is still there as of now). Have things settled down by now, or are people still split between multiple websites (comick, batoto, cubari, people still on md...)? And if so, which ones are worth it and which ones should I avoid?

I made a throw away e-mail account and new mangadex account with vpn and just continued using mangadex honestly since the stuff I'm working on weren't dmcad.
Getting uploading rights on comick seems like a chore and apparently the dev won't give it to you unless the series is dmcad.

they've said that they're most likely going to close dmcad titles for uploading chapters, but knowing mangadex that'll probably take months or even years
so yeah, my recommendation would either be to just continue uploading to mangadex with a vpn, which would also make comick scrape it automatically, or get uploading rights at comick since it's a dmcad title. but apparently it's still a queue waiting for uploading rights

Didn't really care that much since the chapters were already scraped by all the aggregators, but people there are acting like it was the end of the world or something.
But yeah, proton vpn works fine for that purpose and is free. I already used it for access to US and Japan, but it's somewhat of a pain that you have to change locations randomly until you get the right one. But otherwise it's fast enough and works fine for that purpose.

>“心” means “heart”.
This fake Japanese culture. When you put it into a monolingual dictionary:

>1. 体に対し(しかも体の中に宿るものとしての)知識・感情・意志などの精神的な働きのもとになると見られているもの。また、その働き。
>2. 事物の内にこもっていて、それの価値のもとになるようなもの。

When you put “心とは” into Google image search all you get is pictures of brains and psychology tests.

Have you ever once seen a Japanese person refer to a heart with “心”? That's always “心臓”. “心” means “mind”, “soul” or “feelings” and “心の” is “mental” not “of the heart”. Get over it.

Fake weebland picture passed off as Japanese culture.

I respect it. I also sometimes see translators which just add notes describing it like “This character sounds like some old countryside person but I don't know how to express this in English so I just made the character sound normal.”

The big issue for me is that “〜ですこと” and “〜ですもの” characters. You can make it posh but that specific register is hard to capture in English but I sort of get there by starting sentences with “My, ...” a lot which also expresses that same kind of campy, elegant worder.

I would've turned Kaguya's “お可愛いこと” into “My, how cute.” not just “How cute.” still not perfect because “My, how cute.” feels like something someone could actually say but “お可愛いこと。” is really something very campy that only occurs in fiction.

you know that instead of you translating stuff, people are just going to make shitty ESL MTL scanlations instead
also it's a hobby, you don't get paid. you don't have to make it pro level. it's just supposed to be fun
it's completely fine if you just wanted an excuse to quit, but if you still actually wanted to scanlate, you really shouldn't quit because of striving to achieve perfection or something like that

what's the easiest way to get credits/gp on sadpanda?
I'd like to make some galleries of some series that are there, but I don't have an awful lot of GP to download the stuff from the archives, and I don't want to download resized compressed images
I was just thinking of finding the images that are relevant for the manga, but do anyone have any tips on how to get GP enough to do that?
or should I just play hentaiverse or something

Only for a few series and absolutely no reason to lower your own standards.
If you're not happy with it, don't release it. Build up more experience instead.

Anon, machine translation is better than most scanlators in this thread. People here are doing it to learn Japanese.

Deepl says
>My dream is a romance like in a girls' manga, and a wall-slam.

Deepl knows that “そして” there does not start a new sentence.

Also:
>girls' manga
Weird in between space between correct and weebland fake Japanese culture. This I feel is even worse than “shōjo manga” but it should obviously be “girls' comics”.

You do have conversations with Japanese native speakers where you compare the differences between the “少女漫画” of Japan and of your own country and see Japanese people just without thinking use “少女漫画” to describe things from around the world right? You can express your thoughts in Japanese right? You aren't a translator who never as much as had a conversation in Japanese right?

And despite that it's still better than most human translators here because it actually has a base level knowledge of Japanese grammar that they don't.

In fact, they /only/ take the images into account it feels and just use that to make their guesses. They do not speak Japanese grammar, that much is obvious.

That having been said, I would pretty much always translate “そして” when connecting two nouns as something like “... as well as ...” or “... alongside ...” it more so has that tone I feel, not simply “... and ...”

NTA but just the number of comments per chapter and the number of favorites/bookmark between the sites for the same manga, kek. It's even easier to comment on bato because od Disqus and the comment box being on the same page as the manga chapters yet you'll see 1/3 of the comments on there vs. Mangadex for the exact same manga. Usually the number of bookmarks is around 1/3 as well.

Context tokens are limited unless you pay some premium or run shit locally.
If you had to TL chapter 2000 of One Piece and feed it all the characters and events that happened before, you'd have to put in the time to write all that down or feed it some dubious Wiki or whatever. It would increase costs.
Or if you had to correct it because it doesn't fully understand context from the pictures, then you're not good and will never get good. You're barely working around its limitations.

Retards should not try to evangelize about LLMs when they have these crappy standards and are obviously playing in some kiddy mud pit.

That's just the titles /you/ personally like. Some of the things I translated got like 100+ comments per chapter on bato.to but like 12 on Mangadex. I only had a few titles where Mangadex beat out Bato.to.

https://mangadex.org/title/a8a0d3f9-eeb1-466d-925d-e89249e4ec8e/douse-suterareru-no-nara-saigo-ni-suki-ni-sasete-itadakimasu?tab=chapters
https://bato.to/title/113039-with-a-strong-willed-marchioness-prince-yandere-s-love-offensive/2105316-ch_5
Like they remove the chapter because they banned me but the comments and comment numbers are still visible. This thing had 230 comments on bato.to on this chapter and 3 on the same chapter 5 on Mangadex.

It turns out there are many people who don't want a name or email address or website public for obvious reasons when you're committing copyright infringement.

It's also about marking things by others that aren't groups and don't have names. I encounter things that are scanlated without any form of credit page all the time.

No takers?

Wait... could it actually be that all the innit* haters are just pathetic foreveralones who think themselves “translators” while they need to use multiple dictionary looks each page to guess their translations together who never had a conversation in Japanese ever and wouldn't know where to stat doing that who just hate innit* because they hate being reminded of this painful truth and no other reason and then go make up some embarrassing things about how “No native speaker would ever say this thing that's literally in reputable dictionaries.” just to have something to say back because they know they can never win an argument about Japanese?

Wow... that can't actually be true right? That would be so enormously pathetic? Do people that pathetic actually exist?

*I'm not trying to hide you faggots, don't feel proud for sniffing out the obvious like you feel proud because you guessed together, wrongly, the meaning of a Japanese sentence.

Well firstly “all the me-haters” just sounds weird and secondly it's just a style.

Surely you can intuit the difference in feel when I say:
>Aww, poor you, you got dumped on by evil innit.
>Aww, poor you, got dumped on by evil me.

And why I would opft for the former?

I guess, actually taking a step back, it seems to be something one naturally does when referring to “innit” as in the evil boogyman you people talk about not actually myself.

I still maintain that to some degree “innit” is a character you people constructed from a merger of things said by several unrelated people though I have to admit people aren't putting opinions in my mouth I never had or say things like “Everyone who uses Japanese characters is innit” as often as you used to but it used to be really bad.

That one deluded freak who actually seemed to believe that everyone involved in the Māomāo anal memes was one single person also seems to have left.

Generally, a native speaker would probably just go, "Aww, poor you, you got dumped on" as the one doing the claimed dumping is obviously the speaker.

Don't worry, you'll get the hang of English eventually.

If you can get it from literally anywhere else, I assure you it's not worth it. I spent a whole month decompiling and reverse-engineering it years ago, and I'll switch to Kobo or something else as soon as it stops working because there's no way I'll do the same again for the Android app. I just went through the effort because BW was the only place where I could pay with PayPal and nowadays I have other options.

But essentially, you start with the database password that you can get from the archive here, deobfuscate and decompile the app, find all the gorillion keys you need (some of which are triple-encrypted), intercept the function calls between the app and its decryption dll and finally recreate the algorithm they use to load the encrypted images and decrypt them.

Correct but 5 years of Japanese media is also not really a standard translators usually go by.

Ideally, you should be able to go both directions. You should be able to also formulate the sentences you translate from but that level of Japanese is pretty much impossible to find among even professional translators from Japanese, and certainly scanlators.

The point is that if you can output natural sentences in the right context you demonstrate you can correctly intuit their meaning.

There is no such thing as being able to produce the sentences, but not understand them, and you also automatically demonstrate that you don't just guess shit together from context, but you actually understand the sentences and would recognize in what contexts they sound natural.

Scanlation goes through an apocalypse once every 3-5 years. It's never the death knell it's hyped up as. Mangadex has likely lost its position as the de facto manga homeland and in a few years we'll see a real competitor, but we'll inevitably go through this same song and dance there. The freakout was exaggerated by either newfags who weren't even around for HOMBRE, zoomers who think a DMCA will land you in gitmo, or bitter autists looking to shill their preferred knockoff.

It's easy enough to get around with switching your region in the windows settings and using a vpn, but it's a little bit more work than it used to be.
I'll probably just use kobo until it doesn't work anymore since it's by far the easiest and most effortless way to rip.

Your problem seems to be that you think I'm telling people that they otherwise “can't translate” which I never did. The reality is that almost no translations from Japanese would happen any more, certainly not fan-translations if that rule were observed.

I merely ask that they be honest with themselves and their audience of the situation and that they're “guesslators” more than “translators” and that they cannot accurate intuit the nuances of the original and most of all, with the level that's common here, really just misinterpret the fundamental grammar of every other sentence because they just guess it based on context.

People here are bitching about machine translation, but the reality is that it's better than 90% of translators in this thread, that much is obvious.

Just be honest with yourself, to yourself, and to your audience, which seems to be the one thing those people here can't do. Constantly in utter denial and defence mechanisms and unwilling to just admit the simple, basic truth that most fan translations are a patchwork of guesses, nothing more.

I think the worst thing about you is that you're so proud of something so basic (learning another language isn't hard, it just takes time) that you're incapable of offering what would be constructive advice for a lot of people in the thread in a non-antagonistic way. You also constantly say something I agree with (people should translate honorifics, people should translate manga as comics) but because everybody hates you they're less likely to actually do that out of spite, so you're actually probably making scanlations worse in some small way.

So basically if you want to help people, why don't you just post your little pop quizzes in a non-confrontational way? And if you want to insult people, why don't you actually come up with some insults beyond calling people virgins? I don't really know what you get out of these threads.

Guessing based on context actually works out more often than you'd think, even compared to meticulous grammar research (though still obviously a good general grasp on grammar is important). Especially with Japanese dialogues regularly omitting things that are "obvious from context". So to me it always looked like the opposite problem, people are often misreading the story itself so badly that their overly literal translation doesn't actually make any sense. Basic reading comprehension and the willingness to google when you think something isn't making sense does wonders.

I'm not sure what you think I'm proud of. I said multiple times my Japanese is nothing to write home about and in an ideal world no one with my level of Japanese would be translating from it. The only reason I feel somewhat okay doing it is because most scanlations are even worse but I always add a disclaimer that I'm nowhere near a master of Japanese. I'm “conversational” in the language, that's it.

The rest I don't disagree with. I'm not reaching them with how I act but it's not like they aren't antagonistic to me either. The difference is that my random insults are true.

The “virgin” thing is kind of bordering on an irrelevant ad-hominem yeah but I guess the point I'm making is more so that they're social shut ins who don't interact with normal English any more and that that is what causes their philosophy. I point out the insane correlation between being a lonely foreveralone and thinking honorifics should be kept untranslated and ask that people consider the implication. As in people with normal social skills and normal social interaction think it sounds weird.

No, it works less often than you think. People think that their guesses are right because it makes sense in context but it's actually just wrong and yeah, many of my translations are also full of embarassing mistakes that seemed to make so much sense in context but it actually has a completely different meaning.

It's really easy to arrive at something that seems to make sense but totally isn't it like that “〜に決まってる” fiasco here because “I decided that I won't do that.” seemed to make perfect sense in context, but alas, it just means “Obviously I wouldn't do that.” which you know when you do grammar study.

>>280091849
Ironically, this is how it started for me. When Mangadex first got hombred I thought it was a sign and I decided to never read a translation again and most of all to just read Everyone's Toy from the start in Japanese and finish it in Japanese. It was difficult at the time but so many things were different from how I remembered it in the translation and then I started to compare lines and realized what the translators did wrongly and it gave me pause to wonder.

My Japanese was pretty /atrocious/ back then but it was already good enough to spot many mistakes because I did do grammar study from the start.

I don't even know if this is true anymore. Everyone's so illiterate nowadays that I think a lot of people think a sentence is fine if they're able to get any kind of meaning out of it at all. The dmca stuff is more about the ecosystem itself and how it's more streamlined now. My series that's getting a license was hit on mangadex. Otherwise it was a relatively unknown series that I had to push out there but now it's found its audience. Back then something like Jojo could go years without good translations, but now if you do get lucky and do a good job, a series will get licensed pretty soon. With the push for AI, mangaplus, emaqi... it feels like publishers are aiming more and more for mass availability. Ideally they'd like their whole catalogues available out there even if it's paywalled and not very good. So the 'job' of scanning good series so that people find them is getting a little phased out. Like with this poor anon: >>280092594

>You just have to be better than them. You don't have any reason to be this upset over people being bad at Japanese and English and your attitude is affecting your ability to solve your problem.
Why though? Like this is what I forgot to ask. Why are you addressing me and not them? Do you really think I'm worse than they are?

And yeah I'm not fixing anything but truth be told I don't think they'll change no matter what stance I take so I might as well get some fun out of it and amuse myself seeing them squirm every time trying to come back with some counter argument, especially when they try to defend the obvious wrong interpretation of some Japanese sentence just because they want to have something to say back to evil old innit. These people have severe psychological defects, no sense of self-reflection and don't listen to any form of reason. These are the same people that keep insisting that Haruhi Suzimiya is more popular and bigger than Dragon Ball which is obviously an insane claim to make and just like in that discussion, they started it here too.

>I don't even know if this is true anymore. Everyone's so illiterate nowadays that I think a lot of people think a sentence is fine if they're able to get any kind of meaning out of it at all. I don't think most normal people would default to "confession", but I bet a lot of normal people would still think it was fine because they understood it.

I mean they would understand it but they would think it sounds really weird and unnatural where they defend it as sounding natural and normal.

I'm most a solo scanlator, but when I work together with others I do a bit more effort. My last cleaning/redrawing job I spent two hours on. My last translation job was probably just 15-20 minutes though. It depends on the series how much effort I bother putting in I guess.

>Ample citations could be produced
>Including the BBC
>English.stackexchange thread where native speaker discuss this, none of them remark upon that “15 hours” sounds odd and they all accept it as plausible
>They further admit of themselves that they never use 24 hour clock anyway, so what authority would they have to speak of what sounds normal in 24 hour clock?
>NO NATIVE SPEAKER EVER SAYS THIS, I'M TELLING YOU. FUCK ARGUMENTS, I KNOW THIS

These people are beyond reason and any form of logical coherence. Also it's telling that they're trying really hard to find something to catch me on and “16 hours” is the best they can come up with rather than all the actual grammatical mistakes and misinterpretations I made in the past because their Japanese isn't good enough apparently to even fish out the most embarrassing mistakes I made when I just started that I put on display for them.

Yeah, that's the weird part, how ingrained what should be an obvious translation mistake is. People who never learned Japanese already know that “漫画” means “comic book” not “manga”. it's common knowledge. It really shows that these translations never cared about the original intend behind the lines from the start.

>>280096233
Nothing about turning it into anything but about what the original lines communicate. “manga” as a concept doesn't exist culturally in Japan. Japanese people mentally don't make the distinction between strips from their own country and from every other country just like you mentally don't make the distinction between hamburgers from your own country and every other country and don't have a special super deluxe word for hamburgers from your own country.

Anons, everyone knows “heart” can be used to mean “mind” as a /metaphor/ in English. It's not a metaphor in Japanese, it's the literal meaning. This is the reason why this translation gets the point across on the surface but also gives a completely wrong impression of what they're saying.

Do you think “I'm not mentally ready.” and “My heart isn't ready?” mean the same thing? One is a flowery metaphor that looks silly and dramatic in everyday conversation, the other is everyday and straight to the point and that's the wrong impression you're creating when you translate it to “heart” rather than "mind” and the fake Japanese culture arousing the impression that Japanese people constantly speak in metaphors when they don't.

Sure you can also translate “教科書” to “intellectual nourishment” and it gets the point across on a shallow level but it's also horribly wrong because the original wasn't a metaphor or flowery language and just someone talking about his textbook.

Anon, no if you think “I'm not mentally ready.”, a completely everyday sentence and “My heart isn't ready.” very flowery language that would raise a few eyebrows when used in normal everyday conversation are the same your English is just bad. Or rather, as usual, you people go through ridiculous hoops to try to cling onto shit and justify your attachment to a fake culture that never existed. You don't actually believe that these two sentences are the same; you just desperately try to think of something to be able to continue to deny the sad reality that you fell in love with a culture that never existed outside of mistranslations.

>“I'm not mentally ready for it” and “My heart isn't ready” are completely interchangeable, one is not at all an everyday expression and the latter rather flowery language
>People in English absolutely just say “He confessed to me.” to convey “He hold me he loved me.”, I mean, they did have one citation, it just so happened that it came from a Reddit account that was clearly posting all the time in anime subreddits, what a coincidence.

In general it's better using other ways to get raws since they are quicker like kobo/calibre/dedrm and hakuneko, but for some sites you need to use scripts.
So if you need to screenshot something to get raws, you're better off using this basically. At least you get direct rips that way.

dunno how much better the content aware fill is in the versions afterwards, but the newest versions have AI generative fill (which is expensive and you have like 500 credits for a month) and apparently an erase tool (which sounds like a limited AI generative fill but I'm not certain, probably similar to IOPaint) that doesn't use credits
I haven't checked them out though, but I probably should just for curiosity. But I feel cc15 does everything that I need it to do, and I don't like the bloat in the newer versions

I wish I could take full credit for making your “engagement” miserable by arguing you into the ground. But alas, the reality is that when “engaging” is trying to defend positions that are so obviously false they don't even pass the laughing test, “engaging” with anyone is going to be a miserable experience anon.

Sadly, my only special talent here is somehow getting all the most permanent virgins known to man to somehow stumble over each other trying to defend obviously false things, both in their native language, and a language they only know a small number of words of and have no knowledge of grammar of.

Maybe take a step back next time you try to “engage” and wonder whether you actually believe what you're arguing is true, or whether you just want to say something back to innit. It'll end less with you arguing yourself into a corner making progressively more absurd claims to try to still have something to say back.

>I swear guys “My heart isn't ready” is not a considerably more flowery and poetic sounding phrase than “I'm not mentally ready for it.” and is therefore a very good translation of the completely everday, not at all flowery sounding “心の準備ができていない。”

Wow, it's almost like Japanese people “告白” their love because it doesn't sound like confessing to something at all. In fact, I did once see “白状” used to indeed confessing that one was in love, and that was when someone felt really bad about it because it was a forbidden incestuous love.

Manga English scannies gonna manga English. The seethe and denial of their anger, desperately clinging onto the “Japanese culture” they fell so in love with before they learned about 500 Japanese words and no notion of Japanese grammar, all caused by mistranslations of translators just as bad as they were. Anon, I'm not denying obviously that this kind of shit occurs in bad manga English translations all the time. I'm saying it isn't normal English used outside of it and that the only reason it shows up in translations from Japanese is translators with bad Japanese who don't know what “告白” means.

>swing and miss
Surely Innit doesn't mean "swing and *A* miss"? Surely Innit isn't so bad and awful and terrible and poor at English that he can't pick up articles in conversation or subconsciously ignores them? Surely Innit isn't just attention whoring on a Sentinelese underwater basket weaving forum to cope with his perma-virginity and/or the fact that he's a europoor who will never be a native English speaker no matter how hard he tries?

The example sentence is literally
>my last attempt to get a raise out of the boss was a swing and miss.
So no.
But yes, both “a swing and a miss” and “swing and miss” are originally from baseball but nowadays they both are just used for a failed attempt.
But here's the thing, why can't you people just be honest. We both know no one would've thought anything strange of that I at that point said “And swing and miss!” when I pointed out someone got something wrong if if it weren't from innit. Then you all stumble over each other to desperately try to find something to say back and you just end up embarrassing yourself and discrediting yourself as “native speaker authorities” when you're complaining about something that's in The Free Dictionary because the reality is, you don't think there's something wrong with it either. And yes “a swing and a miss” is more common and probably the original form but it's a really laughable and dumb thing to say that people don't say “swing and miss” all the time either.

Why do you keep doing this? You just end up embarrassing yourselves collectively all the time when you try to defend obvious easily provable falsehoods. What do you expect is going to happen? Do you people actually think I can't easily show it's not true? Are you just purely operating from anger and don't really think it through when you make these posts? You just end up embarrassing yourselves when you continue to argue in favor of obvious falsehoods you wouldn't have believed yourself either if it wasn't something you thought you could attack innit it.

The example sentence is wrong. It's ether a typo or it was written by someone who just doesn't know any better. You won't find a single instance of a native English speaker using that idiom that way. You WILL find "swing and a miss", you'll find "a swing and a miss", but you'll never find "a swing and miss". Find me ONE example (preferrably spoken, but it doesn't matter), not something generated or created, of a native English speaker saying something (other than an actual llteral strike in baseball) is "a swing and miss" and I'll concede the point.

>it's a really laughable and dumb thing to say that people don't say “swing and miss” all the time either.
I think it's pretty laughable and dumb for you, someone who doesn't natively speak English OR live in a country where this is even an idiom, to tell ME how common something is. It's hilarious that when you want to make a point about Japanese the first thing you do is stamp your feet, point to monolingual dictionaries and shriek about your conversations with natives, but when it comes to English you'll butt heads with natives all day because you're INCAPABLE of admitting you're wrong.

>Why do you keep doing this?
Because you're wrong. If you want to keep being wrong, go ahead. If one day you overhear some American tourists snickering at you because you said something was "a swing and miss", maybe then you'll get it.

Also yeah, how dare anybody question the sanctity of the site nobody'd ever heard of until some ESL dug deep into google to try and find one example backing them up on something literally every native English speaker knows they're wrong about. Here's another free (and more reputable, because people have heard of it) dictionary entry for it:

Anon, no. it's literally included in multiple reputable dictionaries. These dictionaries don't just select bad examples and have editors and on top of that you can just find it anywhere.
https://www.baseball-almanac.com/dictionary-term.php?term=swing+and+miss
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/go-to

The Camebridge Dictionary does not just go out and select some kind of thing with a typo from The New York Daily News with a typo in it okay. You people are so pathetic and desperate clinging to your obvious falsehoods you probably don't even believe yourselves.
>Ehh... it's on the BBC because they're trying to cater to Indians with bad English, it's not actually good English guys
This kind of stretching and reaching just makes you look pathetic. At best, you just didn't know it could also occur without the article, at which case you should've been convinced when you saw it without in the fucking Camebridge Dictionary that it was also possible, but it's probably just that you never even thought that and, indeed, are just desperately trying to find anything to attack innit on when there is a wealth of translations you can pick apart which contain actual mistakes and it's made easy for you as well because the original lines are visible for that very reason.

Anon, TheFreedictionary is the typically the first dictionary that pops up when you look for a definition nowadays; it's a very well known one, an the other one was the Cambridge dictionary citing an article from New York Daily News.

>What's missing? I know you've linked to wiktionary before , so it's curious that you didn't go there for this. Any reason? Is it a little less reputable now that it doesn't suit your argument?
What's missing is that A) there are zero example sentences there and B) obviously not every dictionary is going to if it have example sentences just magically include some that lack the article. I need only show that a reasonable number of reputable dictionaries includes it to demonstrate that at least in the opinion of those reputable dictionaries, it is fine phrasing. Also, the Youtube videos, the newspaper articles and random forum posts that all include it. It's just something people say.

It's just especially weird that you would say it's not possible because it's just a very general process that articles become dropped from fixed expressions in general like that. “a master and his servant” very quickly became “master and servant” as well. This isn't even specific to this particular idiom.

For instance let's take “arm and leg”. I don't use it personally, I would always say “I have paid an arm and a leg.” but I'm not idiotic enough to think it's not probably used as well, and guess what, it is used when I search for it. I find several reputable sources that use “arm and leg” instead. I wouldn't use it but I'd be dumb as fuck to say that no one else would either, and that's where your problem here lies with your dumb claims of “NO NATIVE SPEAKER WOULD EVER!” which is really easy to disprove in practice for something that even sounds remotely plausible.

1. Your first link is a link to a dictionary in a baseball almanac, and I've already explained that "swing and miss" is used to describe a certain type of strike, but that exact for mis NOT used in the idiom.

2. Your cambridge link is broken and I can't find anything on their site searching it on my own.

3. Your first youtube link is not using it idiomatically, so you've again ignored the main thing I've been trying to tell you.

4. Nothing to say about this one. You found what I asked for on your fourth try. I guess I could say he doesn't seem like the most well-spoken guy in the world and the way he pauses when he says it makes it seem like even he knows something's wrong with what he's saying.

>It's just especially weird that you would say it's not possible because it's just a very general process that articles become dropped from fixed expressions in general like that.
It's not an issue of "possibility", it's about "probability". You CAN say "swing and miss" and you even found an example of one guy using it. The issue is it SOUNDS weird. Just like how you CAN say someone confessed their love to you, but you wouldn't because it's weird.

And you really think it wouldn't spread outside of baseball quickly to just general use and secondly, it was also in the other two.

>2. Your cambridge link is broken and I can't find anything on their site searching it on my own.
Yes, the newspaper article it links it is elapsed here too, but do you actually think Cambridge would just make something up? Come on...
>3. Your first youtube link is not using it idiomatically, so you've again ignored the main thing I've been trying to tell you.
Okay fine, but come on, there are so many citations as well where it is used outside of baseball and again, do you /really/ think it wouldn't leak out of baseball quickly?
>4. Nothing to say about this one. You found what I asked for on your fourth try. I guess I could say he doesn't seem like the most well-spoken guy in the world and the way he pauses when he says it makes it seem like even he knows something's wrong with what he's saying.
Yeah that person sounds a bit insecure and constantly searching for words but come on. It's really reaching at this point.
Basically your claim relies upon that it somehow didn't get out of baseball, itself being unlikely, and that on top of that the entries in the Cambridge and the Freedictionaries are typos they didn't catch?

I really don't get this. The Anglosphere is a very big and diverse region, the fact alone that you so confidently say “No one says this.” to becin with is suspect of about /anything/ to do with English except really big grammatical errors. You should know from the start that it's really quite likely that things that aren't idioms where you grew up could very well be in Australia or Scotland or whatever. This alone is weird.

Yeah, and I would never say “no native speaker of English ever says that”. That's the difference because that too would be very easy to disprove. I say it's not part of English outside of certain fandoms and that it might have in some minor cases bled outside of it. You come with the very strong claim that no native speaker of English will ever say it or they all will find it sounding weird, and that is a claim about English you really only make when you, as usual, try to find something to attack innit with. The Anglosphere is a very diverse place as said.
Same thing with “16 hours”. How would you people even know it's not completely normal bog standard British English? You don't, and you just phrase it like that because, as always, you just really want something to attack innit on.

And who knows, maybe there is some region on the planet where native speakers of English actually do randomly say “he confessed to me” like that, maybe it happens in Singapore because it's close to Japan and they actually calqued this from Japanese a long time ago there, who knows, but then you should translate the entire thing to Singapore English of course.

I don't even know what the link was so I don't even know what you think I'm asserting was made up.

The term did get out of baseball, obviously, but that particular phrasing is extremely uncommon. So uncommon that before seeing that video you linked I'd never heard it even once in my entire life.

>the fact alone that you so confidently say “No one says this.” to becin with is suspect of about /anything/ to do with English except really big grammatical errors.
Normally I wouldn't be, but in this case it's such an america-centric idiom that I'm confident. I'm not really trying to tell you you're an idiot or anything, I'm trying to help you speak more natural English.

For what it's worth, I don't even know what the 16 hours thing is about. I don't read most of the arguments you have because you're usually right and most of the replies you get are bad, I just don't know why you're so married to this "swing and miss" thing. Do you even disagree with me that even if it IS said, it's extremely unnatural? Are you going to keep using this unnatural phrase just to spite strangers online? Because it's just one of the things they brought up that I feel are obviously false because it ends up in reputable dictionaries and there are just so many citations.

But let's even concede for sake of argument that it sounds obviously wrong to you. This is sort of the thing with English that you should be used to by now that even if it sounds wrong to you to drop an article, people just, on some place on the planet do this most likely or even maybe quite close to you and when you see it's included in reputable dictionaries and and business and news articles it's probably just something people say.
Like to me “I went to hospital” sounds weird, but I know for a fact it's common usage in the North of England and Scotland. Like I said “arm and leg” sounds weird to me too but I need only do some research to find out many native, in publications where it's hard to think it's just a typo do use it, that's really all you need I feel. The Anglosphere is a very big and diverse place.

But to me “swing and miss” how does not sound unnatural no. “It was a swing-and-miss.” or “And... swing and miss!” both sound very natural to me, especially the latter by the which was how I originally used it. It occurs to me that it's actually two verbs there, and in it's an imperative, like “And... say something stupid and get embarrassed!” so yeah, the entire argument was kind of dumb from the start.

“a swing-and-miss” is one noun. That's just how English commonly evolves, that happens to all sorts of idioms that they eventually get contracted that way.

And yes, I wouldn't say “I've paid arm-and-leg for it” either. But evidently some people do, and not just random forum posts, no, it shows up in fairly reputable outlets. This is the issue with you people. I too have never before searching for it seen “I've paid arm-and-leg” but I also have enough experience with English to know that it sounds like something that some people out there are probably using. It sounds “plausible” like “something someone could seriously use” to the point that it doesn't sound completely offensive and with how big and diverse the Anglosphere is, that's really all you need for something to probably be used at least in some place regularly.

Anon, the implication is obviously “I can tell from this that you're not a native speaker.” which really can't ever be said from something that ends up in the Cambridge dictionary and just in general is often found in fairly serious articles on the internet.

Let me make it clearer for you:
>“I'm going to hospital.” sounds weird to my ears but I know that it's really common in many places in the U.K.
>“And... swing and miss!” as two verbs, which is where this originally started is definitely completely normal and natural to virtually any native speaker of English. If you tell me that sounds wrong to you as a native speaker of English I just don't believe you.
>“a swing-and-miss” also happens to sound fine to me personally, I concede that maybe some native speakers of English don't think it sounds fine. but they should also have enough experience to realize that it definitely sounds plausible enough that /many/ native speakers would use it, and indeed, it finds itself in dictionaries and, as already conceded, is a very established idiom in baseball circles so it most likely leaked out of it.

You never provided a source for the Cambridge dictionary thing, you didn't paste the link right. Your only source is "the free dictionary," something I'd never heard of before today.

"I'm going to hospital" doesn't sound weird to me at all because I've been speaking English and consuming media in English my entire life, so I've heard British people talk as well.

"Swing and miss" isn't two verbs, the idiom is never used as an imperative, it's always a pair of nouns, even in the baseball-specific naming of that type of strike, "a swing and miss".

You're correct that it came from baseball, but it came from baseball as the idiom "A swing and a miss", or "swing and a miss".

Your sense of what sounds fine doesn't matter because a lot of things that are wrong sound right to you, you're not a native speaker.

I don't know how much simpler I can make this.
