It ramps up the pity baiting so much that it ends up falling completely flat. The family situations of both characters was a good foundation, but the bullying itself was so over the top with so little buildup that it just didn't do anything.

It's an Asian thing in general. Their societies function on the expectation that everybody knows the correct behavior to follow for each and every scenario. The only two parts I didn't like were the poorly executed misery/tragedy and the octopus. Everything else about it was a solid 7-8/10.
The manga was just too short to form a connection with a character which was purposefully designed to be as one dimensional as possible.

If that's the case, then his sacrifice falls even flatter. This stupid octopus makes both Shizuka and Marina break down in tears just from the unconscious memory of him, yet as a character, he did absolutely nothing to endear him to the viewers. If he's just a blob of symbolism, with no character whatsoever, then it has none of the potency of, for example, the sacrifice of someone who is actually a character AND represents something greater than himself. It's dissonant.
It's supposed to represent childhood innocence, sure, but there also has to be a character there to give some emotional purchase. Just slapping on symbolism on a flat character with no other redeeming qualities has the opposite effect of delivering a narrative punch that was most likely intended in the climax.

Not sure I'd call it AOTS yet, since it's AFAIK the only show that's actually aired for Summer so far, but it is pretty fantastic. Gorgeous animation and direction, the production value on this is simply absurd. Takopi learning how truly scary the situation is and finding himself unable to help in ways that don't simply seem to get her more in trouble is really heartbreaking but also realistic, and he's a great vehicle to mesh against this story. Obviously Shizuka is a child, but having the person trying to save with her being an even younger child in effect is really great. Excited to watch more.

If I were to assume, kids nowadays are less physically violent in the better off areas. However, they are a lot more cruel in other ways. Like deliberately driving others to suicide. I didn't say the show is realistic, in fact I agree with you that it's depiction of bullying is unrealistic (not in content but in presentation, it's a great way to tell the story of bullying visually) but when I say realistic, I meant the emotions and turmoil Takopi faces when he tries to help. In trying to help he really only makes the situation worse, or at least feels that he's making the situation worse. It's a very hard hitting and emotional beat that anyone whose experienced abuse can relate to. After finishing the manga, the most jarring part has to be how inconsistent Shizuka is. Like if she could do what she did, why didn't she do it earlier? It's like she's a completely different person after chapter 3.

For the ending it's so rushed that Shizuka and Marina somehow got past their differences and got together. You would expect there to be context showing the two understanding the circumstances of their family, but psycho Shizuka and kill bill Marina just put aside their differences due to Happyian magic I guess. Logically I can see a way for the two to get together, but it's way too rushed. Azuma imo got the most complete story. It is important because of the way the story frames itself. Shizuka's and Marina's violent relationship is already near the climax at the beginning of the story and it reaches the climax with the dog getting taken away (and killed) within a week. All Takopi's efforts only show that at that point, no intervention can fix this or prevent the misery and depression, except for literal Clarktech/magic.
If you want to look at more generalized messages, such as it can be fixed if they have had their childhood innocence or if they can communicate through a common interest, or so and so, fine. But the story's actual ending is poorly executed and conveyed, fundamentally because of how it starts.

Yeah i kinda figured it would. I do like the art style so I give it points for that. But if you're gonna handle something with as much gravity as the subject matter displayed here I am going to be a lot more critical in my judgement. In my opinion it's handled really poorly. Almost caricature how cartoonishly villainous the antagonist behaves. Hard to imagine a fucking 4th grade girl acting like that shy of being an actual psychopath, which do exist but even for Japan I find it hard to believe such an intense degree of bullying would go unaddressed by adults outside of very extreme/abnormal circumstances. I sincerely think less is more with a topic like youth suicide. Pic related for example imo far far better handling. But it also mostly uses only implications and focuses more on the impact without having to ever go into any detail. Sort of like horror actually in that by letting the viewer fill in the gaps you can actually manage to give a far stronger impact without destroying the authenticity/plausibility of the plot.

I have the exact same gripe with One Piece with respect to how he handles topics such as fucking slavery and genocide. Just way too cartoonishly over the top with how evil the villans are. It's just pure shock value which detracts from what these topics are actually like in the real world. The difference is at least one piece obviously isn't trying to portray itself as grounded. But this Takopi anime is very much presenting as a sort of realistic setting, then brings up very realistic and serious topic as child suicide and bullying by using absolutely unrealistic characters. For this reason I do not care for it. A swing and a miss.
