That's probably the scariest part about this story: mob mentality that picks a vicitim just by chance. If another prof would've discovered Planet Remina first or hell, even if he named it after something else than his daughter, they (or at least Remina) wouldn't have been hunted down. Hell, might would've joined the hunt too, since people in fear do silly things

I like the strange coincidental logic here in Remina. Like the star only started moving towards them when the guy noticed it stopped moving, but that had to have happened years ago because of the distance. It's like some kind of strange fate or otherwordly logic.

I think the chill that goes down your spine is better here. You basically get to find out that a strange cosmic phenomenon has spent the last 16 years of your life barreling directly for Earth, and you knew nothing about it.

It's literally cosmic horror. The horror of lightspeed, of not being able to observe something that's heading straight for you as fast as it can.

Reminds mecof the idea of false vaccuum, a bubble of space where the laws of physics break down, expanding at the speed of light. It could hit and instantly kill you without anyone or any measuring instrument knowing about it. Maybe you could identify it by chance with quantum tunneling or producing a warp in space somehow, but it's iffy if you could pull eller either of those loopholes off.

It actually do be like that. With special relativity, you see the "old" stuff at normal speed, but as you approach a significant fraction of the speed of light, that information gets compressed in time. So they would indeed be seeing Remina's approach in a far shorter time than the 16 light years it was away.

>Do you look at the stars?
Yep. I don't know much about them but I did get to see something neat once. I was taking the trash out one night and was walking back and something caught my eye (I think it was a bat flying around) which made me look up just in time to see something that looked like a massive, fiery comet streak across the sky. It had an extremely long orange tail and it stayed in the sky for a long time even after the head disappeared behind a roof. I tried to look it up and I think it was a fireball.

A hellish monstrosity larger than Earth emerges from a tear in reality—a vast abomination that feeds on planets and stars, and whose mere presence bends the logic of this world. And this divine monster gazes at you from countless light-years away, its jaws, thousands of kilometers long, dripping with infinite hunger.
Uzumaki is a slow but inevitable end. Gyo is horrible but avoidable if you're lucky if you are immune. Demons can be fought with weapons. You can hide from the giant floating heads until they disappear (although they will return).
But Remina is a completely different apocalypse. More inevitable than the others, and much more direct, too.

Yeah it's a little confusing, but they were watching Remina wandering around space until that point.
The scientist is freaking out because they are looking that 16 light years ago Remina JUST stopped wandering around and started moving towards earth.
Since Remina moves close to the speed of light and Remina was 16 light years away when they detected the movement towards Earth, that means Remina is actually near the solar system the moment they noticed it was moving towards Earth, even if they look at it and think it's still very far away.

Gyo: You can be immune and fight against the ghost gas and its machines.
Uzumaki: Slow process, inevitable destiny, but you can have a good ending as a completely happy immortal being.
Village of the Siren: The demons win or at least destroy human civilization, but it doesn't mean humans couldn't or aren't fighting them. They can be fought.
Floating Giant Heads: Eventually, human existence will be destroyed, but it will take a long time, so hiding from the heads isn't that complicated.
Doll Investigation Curse: Randomly affects children all over the world and eventually turns them into monsters. We don't know more because it's literally a 2-page story. We don't know how many children and at what rate. It's possible it's not much of a threat.
Remina: A giant, god-damned planet with a mouth and teeth the size of continents that defies the laws of physics. wants to devour the Earth, and nothing can stop it. The most direct and fastest of all.

I question if that is actually the case. At the end of Uzumaki we're shown that the cursed villagers end up turning to stone and essentially being used as concrete to keep bulding the city, so I doubt that they're immortal and not just... dead there.
Also you can totally escape the Uzumaki curse so long you leave the goddam city before the curse becomes too strong.

There's nothing indicating that it wants to do anything negative to earth yet. So far in the story it has only plowed through uninhabited planets and stared at people. In fact it slowing down shows that it doesn't want to just destroy earth.

She's experiencing a brief relief from people wanting to tear her to pieces because everyone has a different girl they all want to murder for once. Naturally she can't enjoy it because she's busy being seethingly jealous of Remina getting all this attention instead of her, even if it from a lynch mob.

I'm happy to accept the unreal horror, but I always have a module running that's thinking about stuff like how that eye moving that fast and then stopping could flick off lots of surface debris at unimagineable speeds, endangering that craft. It's moving continental distances in a second.
