I personally don't use MTL (well, occasionally for editing advice as I'm an ESL) but listening comprehension is not among my strongest skills when there are random coined words being thrown around. While they aren't needed for the majority of lines, having captions cuts down the time required to translate significantly.
But I can see how there is already zero trust for any fansub release, as it's mostly no-names using MTL on captions or even AI-transcribe like what CR just did, and people that don't know Japanese wouldn't necessarily be able to tell if the translation is bullshit if the English text itself isn't nonsensical.
