I feel like the more japanese horror I read, the more my interest in it is beginning to wane. Some is still good, like Ura Baito, Nikubami, or Dark Gathering, but I think the main things those have in common is that the main characters know their situation is dangerous. Their lives are in danger, and the threats are monstrous, but it wasn't a 'surprise' that they found themselves in danger. Another one that's good is Fuan no Tane, but for different reasons. There's no answers, but it's focused more on the uncomfortable and the surreal.

Something anon posted last week put it in perspective for me, a ton of jap horror is built around its randomness. You could be walking down a street when suddenly out of nowhere a ghost descends and splats you into a puddle of gore and tortures your soul for a billion trillion kalpas, and all you can do is accept your lot. You didn't even do anything different - you walked down that street hundreds of times for work at the same pace as normal. It came out of nowhere and there is no way to even react. It's the kind of scary story a eusocial ant would tell - you may die at random, but the hive still endures. It's the same reason I dislike American horror and its random diabolus ex machinas at the end of every single one.

By the way, the raws are out there...somewhere...Wu Tang ain't nothin' to fuck with...

...and he will personally look into Yayoi. A bit short this month, but there you go. They can't always be 40 pages or over. Also...another thing about two-tone hair...in one of Kondo's Q&A sessions, he mentioned that he didn't reveal our boy Asura's living name because it might spoil things for later. What I'm getting at is I wonder if Two-tone hair and Asura are somehow related? Maybe not brothers, but maybe cousins...could also partly explain how Asura got so strong if there is just something -innate- about his spirit. But I could just be jumping too conclusions.

Also, another thought, before I forget. Yayoi has a lot of graduates, yes? I don't expect every member of this exorcist squad to live, but if enough of them do and they become allies, what if during the finale, they get paired off with a graduate that compliments their skills for the home stretch? Again, maybe I'm being premature, but I personally would take that over they just do to hype up the replaced...

>it depends on what you are looking
I've just been more aware of it, that's all. I was reading anthologies like Social Media Ghost Stories or Reiwa Ghost Story, and those really did it right, leaving more questions than answers and making you think.

I was looking into Dr. Strange's Phantom Seminar, for instance, and chapter 2 has a family driving along a country road on their monthly dinner trip when suddenly A GIANT GHOST APPEARS AND IT INSTANTLY BODYJACKS YOU AND THEN IT EATS YOUR ENTIRE FAMILY, leaving one of the MCs as an only survivor, and I was like 'well that was random" instead of being shocked or intrigued. Then I realized the story was really similar to Nikubami - they both start with a loved one dead, then start flashback arcs to see what happened. But Nikubami was way better at setting up dread and a reason for the MCs to be there. Phantom, in comparison, is a series of people whose families all got randomly whacked by ghosts they can't even describe but can somehow still name, which makes me wonder how you can even exist, let alone interact.

I guess my main hangup is "if a random ghost can annihilate a character instantly, because of methods they are powerless to understand, with excessive force they had no previous context for, for no reason at all, then it's a bad story." All the stories I described as good avoid this issue.

>Dr. Strange's Phantom Seminar
Just started reading this, and the series establishes really quickly that the things therein aren't truly spirits at all but instead malignant information-hazards that manifest and lurk in the shadow of civilization, festering and growing. There's no method for prediction, counters, or even sharing any details beyond what the Profesor herself detailed because for all intents and purposes, they are as omnipresent and dense as 'information' itself - even the professor, actually experienced with them, outright died because she got too exposed and she went through various lengths to keep her daughter from remotely learning of anything to do with Phantoms because of the dangers presented.

I'd also point out that Tadahiko's family didn't get attacked until they noticed the giant silhouette of the Phantom that hijacked them and consumed them. Which further goes to show that it's information, the knowledge of them, that places you in danger. Because the Phantoms ARE that information.

First is Kairaku Ketouin, of the Chuugoku region of Japan, a Shinto priest.
Next is Gyousai Gyakushi, of Northern Hokkaido, a "curse bearer", as in, someone who's under a divine curse or punishment.
Third is Locks Breakspia (not trying with the name), from Kyuushuu, a Christian exorcist from the looks of it.
Fourth is another Hokkaido representative, this time from the south, the unaffiliated Rei Shisui.

Next is Koushin Okuoka, of Northern Kinki, a "black shaman". To be precise, it uses the same kanji as Miko and other female mediums like Noro.
Then we have the moustached Taoist (the term used is houjutsu-shi, and I've often seen houjutsu be used for Xian, the mountain hermits), Rinsen Yoshiro of Okinawa.
Then, the grown-up strongest child Mamoru Ooboshi, an Onmyouji of Kantou.
Next is the Tsukimono Heir (tsukimono are possessing spirits like Inugami), Seishirou Toge of Shikoku.

Actually, as seen in chapter 70, once the ghost is captured in the dolls, the doll basically serve as their body, thus whatever happens to the doll happens to them, which is why sealing them is possible, as the doll being sealed means they are sealed, this happens as long as the doll itself isn't destroyed like Tai Sui did for his own doll

However, the doll only specifically deal with physical damage done by spiritual energy, which is why Sergeant's energy sucking, Oiran's fire(which creates real fire), Great priest's sutra which targets the soul, Tai Sui's star of annihilation(which contains actual air mixed with spiritual energy) and so on can damage her without damaging the dolls

Okay, I wish I could say I'd finish it, but it feels way too redundant. The fact is that most of the chapter is translated well enough, the primary issue is the wording choices and occasional mistranslation (both of which kinda prove there's an AI at work here, because they're obvious once you actually try translating by hand).
The thing is that there are very clear moments when he had to translate by hand, like when some sentences are broken between bubbles, but there are other times, like the baby discussion (which is referring to Gyousai being currently possessed by a miscarrieage baby's ghost), where it doesn't seem like he tried at all.
Literally all he has to do is try and nobody would notice that he had an AI helping him, so I have no idea why he's gotten this lazy.

Kremdin tried translating the names awkwardly, the official Tl is pretty bad, but translating the names in general would be difficult since grammar is a thing

High priest has the easiest name to translate, it's literally evil sutra + high priest, and revered spirit in transitional period is the literal translation, the rest are:

Martyring for country + imprisoned+ ghost sergeant
Soul sucking+dazzling+Otogiri(which is also a flower that signifies revenge+courtesan(Oiran)
Thousand souls+ kegon(the official tl uses Kegon falls, which is indeed an existing waterfall known for suicides, but is in Tochigi, not Hachioji, the actual location, Kegon itself is Japanese for Avataṃsaka, meaning "a great number," "a multitude," or "a collection.)+ self-slitting+ child
斎弄(religious purification+playing with, basically calling him scarligeious)+ exposed head(probably a more cool way to call him baldie)
Lunar eclipse+complete annihilation+black asura

India and Africa are more about evil spirits than human ghosts. Russia has some spooks but like Europe the majority are inhuman monsters of some kind. America is probably the most monster focused when it comes to folklore with most of our actual ghost stories beginning and ending with "there is a ghost there". Although to our credit sometimes our ghost women do try and seduce living men, purely out of love

To the japanese, ghosts are forces of nature and you just have to weather them. To europeans, ghosts are well-known and opposed by rigid heirarchy of the church, which co-opted or destroyed all opposing spiritual outlooks. And ghost stories don't do well in America because of the independent combative spirit, where ghosts end up just one more thing to hunt down, fight, and shoot.

Actually, like I said most of our ghost stories really do just end with ghosts existing. Its uncommon for anything major to actually happen to the humans or the ghost in America folk lore outside the original death that caused the ghost.
