They had their own various empires and mythology(Siam, Lanna, Khmer(for Cambodians who would war with them).
They're not particularly fond of Indians and while there is a generalized word for 'foreigner'(which is mostly used for white people in general, otherwise they'd say something specific like 'Japanese person' or 'Chinese person', they actually reserve a special word for Indians that translates directly to 'visitor' and is kind of used as a pejorative in my experience.
It's more like a unique take on Buddhist traditions very separate from Indian, and a lot of Chinese influence.
