Will remasters in 4K from the original 16mm/35mm film negatives of 90s anime ever happen?

People hail the Dragon Box release as the best version(and it is) but even that release has inaccurate colors due to the film stock aging and Toei not bothering to color correct the series.

The majority of Dragon Ball Z was shot on 16mm film compared to the more standard 35mm. However, there were a few episodes of Z (episodes 73 to 80) shot on 35mm film.

very little interest from most studios due to the huge undertaking it'd be to reacquire all the film (unless they still have it), scan through it all and then correct it
The most you'll get is a rescan of a few popular series with fans being able to color correct it digitally.

For big series like Dragon Ball they release a new version every few years assuring fans that THIS TIME it's the definitive version, because they know fans will buy it for any price. But it never actually is definitive because then they'd have nothing to sell you ever again. For smaller series there aren't enough people who care to make it worthwhile from a cost perspective to go back to the source.

16mm was standard for tv shows, 35mm would be used for things like OP/ED or things like stock animation because it holds up to being copy/pasted a lot better.
Anyhow I don't think you'll get a good restoration, too expensive. That and for bigger shows like Dragonball or other Toei properties like Sailor Moon, they want a digital version that they can re-air on tv and that means smearing it up by wiping out as much grain as they can.

I'm just amazed that fans haven't compiled a definitive color-corrected torrent pack from all the best available sources yet.

You're better off just reading Dragon Ball at this point.

Well, that's really nice. Still pretty curious that it took so many years before we got this, but it is a pretty fuck hueg series, so I suppose I understand.

fun fact btw, fans own film prints of the tv episodes. they're just hoarding them/keeping them private. not the kineko movie scans

Depending on the show and it's length that'd be pretty pricey to do with uncertain return on investment. As other anons have said, fan efforts are good and probably better than what you'd get officially anyway. That being said there is one TV anime I can name that has received an official 4k scan, albeit it was only used as a base for a normal bluray release: Cardcaptor Sakura

Really sad that people can't do this for every series, a Brave and Getter robo version would be great. Include the original Sailor Moon too, just for the heck of it.
