>The biggest examples of this are the DVDs. I can't think of a big series that has worse releases than Dragon Ball.
It's mostly just the BDs and Orange Bricks that fuck everything up.
Pioneer, UUE, Levels, and even the DBoxes aren't ideal, but they're very standard Toei remastering efforts. I was able to live with the DBoxes for a good 15 years before Seed of Might's efforts were fully realized, and while the CC are the definitive releases, I could also mentally accept these other releases with their crushed blacks or decayed film resulting in bad colours.

The VA quality on these releases is completely abhorrent though, and I shouldn't be shocked that Toei allowed that to happen, but really, it is a bit shocking that their largest adaptation (pre-One Piece), spanning 508 episodes in its original broadcast run, had such atrocious sound quality.

Why does arguably the most popular anime have so many bad home releases?

People hail the Dragon Box release as the best version(and it is) but even that release has inaccurate colors due to the film stock aging and Toei not bothering to color correct the series.

The majority of Dragon Ball Z was shot on 16mm film compared to the more standard 35mm. However, there were a few episodes of Z (episodes 73 to 80) shot on 35mm film

>While this is true, most old animation already has noise from being on film.

Will remasters in 4K from the original 16mm/35mm film negatives of 90s anime ever happen?
