One Piece keeps making its world feel unnecessarily smaller by making every important character special and related to each other.

I wanted to rant about this seeing how it's something that has been on my mind for years but no one seems to ever bring up. I'm aware it's a hot take but it's still a rant and I don't really mind to not get imaginary karma points, I just want to share it with more people than my usual cycle since they have fallen off from One Piece by now. I still consider Oda a great writer overall, just mentioning since I know complaining about something makes reddit assume you loathe it as if it killed your newborn.

It's kind of ironic, because the reason why me and many others have always spoke highly about Oda's worldbuilding was how alive and interconnected the world felt. But I genuinely believe he has been overdoing it for years and it keeps getting worse — a feeling that only grows more and more each single time I catch up with the manga.

Take Luffy for example. Initially he was a random guy wanting to fulfill his dream and give Shanks his straw hat back. A straw hat that was supposed to be a mundane random item that became special to Luffy himself because of their shared story. That's it. It never needed to be more than that. Yet it did, it suddenly became the trademark of Roger himself, creating a direct link between him and Luffy. Luffy never idolized Roger, only his title. His idol was actually Shanks. This turns him into the ridiculously lucky guy who got passed down Roger's trademark (which doesn't even make much sense because the World Government literally named Luffy's crew after said straw hat, so it should be iconic to him and certainly not something that the literal most famous pirate in recorded history would also wear), he is too destined for success for me to even care anymore. It's probably even more important considering Inu's own hat.

But it doesn't end here. Luffy turns out to be the grandkid of the Hero of the Marines. Even more, he is also the son of the most wanted criminal alive. But it can go even beyond! His Devil Fruit who was just a random funny unorthodox one turns out to be the literal most important one ever, related to Joyboy, a Mythical Zoan that the Government wanted so badly to keep in their power yet apparently never worried that much before about the guy with literal rubber powers. Luffy is the second coming of Joyboy in a ridiculously literal way.

One Piece isn't (usually) a story where your blood or personal connections should take you very far, one could argue it's literally going against classism. Yet way too many characters have gotten this same treatment even when it really wasn't needed for the story. Luffy is the main character, but he is far from the only one. His adoptive brother turns out to be the fucking son of Roger himself. Sanji got an entire arc dedicated to his very important family (which we could kind of count out to be fair since at least in that case it does have a very important place in the story). Tons of secondary characters introduced previously have turned out to be from some important lineage. It doesn't feel like they are trying to earn their own place in the world with their own personal abilities — even if they had decided to become random Marines, Luffy and Ace would have been the sons of Dragon and Roger.

Shanks himself is also now one of the twin sons of someone so important he's one of the current Five Elders. He isn't just a powerful pirate who managed to climb to the Yonko rank, he is special in every single aspect. All of the other Yonkos even turned out to be from Rock's crew making them all old comrades (except Blackbeard who was always supposed to be related to Whitebeard obviously). There are no underdogs anymore. Everyone is a special snowflake — insert here the Invincibles meme — it isn't even only the main crew anymore.

Probably the most egregious examples are Zoro, who is not a random swordsman climbing to the top but actually comes from a family related to swordsmanship and with ties with Wano. A connection... so incredibly unimportant it never came up on the entire arc. It literally has no reason to exist in the story. Similarly, Brook, who was already tied with previous characters since the very start, apparently wasn't special enough for Oda anymore so now we get that he had shared memories with a God Knight who gets possessed by Imu. It's extreme fanfiction-like and not in a good way. I used to make fun of fics that did that kind of stuff like randomly making Nami Shanks' daughter, but by now I'm 100% convinced she will turn out to have very important parents in the actual story. I could probably also include Franky and Queen on this list, but that is not confirmed at all and would be atrocious so luckily for now I can't.
