The director has stated that the adaptation moved around events and compartmentalized them so that they can tell the story in an episodic format, because in the original there were a lot of things that were built up over time and eventuated later, but of course they don't trust the tiktok crowd that they're targeting to be able to keep track of events over multiple episodes and hence this approach. I find it funny that you can spot the oddity, it means they're doing a terrible job of rearranging the events.

Episode 4 was fantastic, it's just that a lot of shit that was skipped over in episodes 1-3 is still haunting it.
The mention of Roselle's diary and acting and digesting potions was basically a throw-away line from episode 2, but is so fucking crucial that it comes off as almost completely uncovered.
Not as bad as fucking Benson got done dirty though, he wasn't even introduced and suddenly he's just around.
Definitely a massive drag on everything involving the Moretti family.
Putting information about their living situation in the chibi shorts is... fucking stupid.
Though, if this is a preview of what's to come for the remaining episodes it'll be good in my mind even with a chance at redemption for the first 3 episodes depending on how its handled.

I (and everyone else being honest about the adaptation) are not denying there are mistakes or poorly adapted parts, but given the constraint of 12 episodes and the first 3 episode's chaos, this episode is far and away better, and I'd argue it's better than most of the Japanese shit airing this season as well.

actually i think they did pretty well characterizing melissa this episode, particularly in the moment where they make the "she's actually 16" statement, as it introduces her double-sided jewy intent in bringing over benson and klein (a big part of her likability in the original) while also endearing her further with the playful(?) hebephile accusation towards klein; the same works on klein's end as well to showcase his newfound care for melissa, which is specifically capstoned by him resolving not to include melissa and benson into beyonder/Seer matters even if doing so might assist his digestion of the potion (which in turn we are primed to think about because it's illustrated in great detail in the first half; he in fact even considers specifically informing the two that he's a seer for this end preceding this scene)

sound design i agree with on the battles--they're far too over-the-top in most cases, which distinctly cause the grandiosity when it's intended to fall flat--but i actually quite like the music used in the ambient scenes and esp. the shots introducing the party as Selena's home and the later depiction of Audrey's room;

This is one of the most popular web novels of China, it's in their national archive. There's no way they don't have the money to make a 24ep first season & a 1hr first episode. This was a good opportunity to show international audiences that China can produce quality media instead of being known for making cheap knockoffs. They ripped the soul out of it, and yes I am going to still reiterate that LOTM is a slow burn lore heavy creepy mystery why is every episode so far including episode 4 playing like a typical action Shonen. Vincent shouldnt have been actively going after Klein or purposefully trying to corrupt Selena, it was a string of coincidences tying all these events and characters together. Klein receiving a message from the rituals is not the same as going above the grey fog either. Why did they go that route? Because the original scene in the novel probably wasn't exciting enough, they needed Klein to have a ritual battle with Vincent for more aura farming.

Wrong. This is a great improvement because it foreshadows something that in the novel could be kind of considered an asspull. Namely when Klein gathered the Tarot Club prayers (that happened because The Fool was not initiating the Monday gathering so the members pray to him to inquire about it) to free himself of the influence of Amon on their "first meeting" way later in the story.
This is a small scale version of it early in the story and establishes that this kind of mechanic does actually exist. The fact that one prayer (or two cumulatively since Klein didn't respond to Alger yet) is enough for a conflict between Sequence 9 beyonders of the same level (including the ones giving the prayers) also makes sense compared to the much higher-sequence incident against someone of higher sequence than Klein and the other Tarot Club members later that requires multiple prayers to resolve.

The grey fog concealment has two different aspects. One is permanent (hiding "transmigration"-related memories, always a lucid mind in dreams) while the other is temporary and manifests as the lingering remains of the grey fog in Klein after he returns from the grey fog to his body.
Why didn't the Antigonous Book-buffed Antigonous Puppet immediately control Klein again when in that state it clearly just marionettes anyone within its range of control instead of its usual more whimsical (might leave someone who broke control alone for a bit) behavior? The only explanation that makes sense and is consistent with some other points in the novel is that the grey fog has lingering remains and I think the novel even points that out at some point, but I don't recall when exactly (I think it was volume 3?), it was some very random off-hand remark.
Now what happens when Klein hears the prayers of someone while not in the grey fog? The initial connection he established with it actually redirects the information about the prayers to Klein and to do that the fog has to connect to Klein and thereby leaves (albeit likely smaller and for a shorter time than just after returning from it) lingering grey fog remains, but to deal with a ritual conducted by a mere Sequence 9 Secrets Suppliant? Come on.

In the episode it was more about the lingering grey fog remains side-effect (like being able to freely act within the Antigonous Puppet's range) that comes with the connection, in the later novel scene the connection itself was the key, since he himself was still restricted by the four-steps-counter-clockwise ritual to initiate a connection.

Because it wasn't about a random spooky event that is resolved by exorcising some random evil spirit from a girl, nor was it a Nighthawk mission.
Instead it was a targeted, calculated assassination scheme against Klein where the agent of a foreign organization directly puppeteered the friend of Klein's sister and took the possessed girl, Klein's sister and another girl hostage while baiting Klein, separated from his work colleagues by luring him to a private event as part of his daily life, to try save their lives. Klein ultimately prevailed only because of the combination of his quick thinking and literally "dumb luck" in this particular case, but he gave himself the moniker of "the king of yellow and black who wields good luck" so it just shows that it's appropriate. But he shouldn't rely on that too much. We already saw that it's actually possible to manipulate events to end in a targeted outcome and the cause just makes itself up, with Old Neil's 30 pound debt elimination demonstration, but the enemies could perhaps make use of such "reasonable developments" themselves, so Klein should focus less on relying on luck or happenstance and focus more on actually preparing himself for any such unexpected events.

Also Klein used a dagger to create a "Wall of Spirituality" (I assume Old Neil's classroom part 4 explains it) which isolated the room from the outside both in spiritual and physical sense, so unless someone enters directly through the door, no one outside except for maybe some Beyonders would notice what is happening.

Surely you think that information, especially a CHANT that is designed to point not just to Klein, but also to the grey fog would surely be something that the mind of a ritual-monster possessing a random non-beyonder civilian controlled by the ritual magic of a Sequence 9 Secrets Suppliant could easily shrug off and keep gripping Klein, no big deal, amiright?

You know, we even see order of things. First blue-ish flame representing Audrey's prayer, then 4 dots on Klein's hand pop up representing Klein's connection to the grey fog (monster's green aura stays away from that hand), then the grey fog in the "castle" around the throne overflows, followed by Klein's eyes becoming clear again and him waking up, then the tentacles blow up with the monster's green aura disappearing from around Klein and the monster is holding its head in pain and screaming, showing that it suffered from some sort of feedback from its prior mental connection to Klein. An ideal adaptation would be budgeted for a large number of episodes to start with (minimum 26 but the expectation should be a minimum of 52), to give the story time to breathe. It should have a dedicated team put together to work on it for 3-4 years. We know this is a successful model of animation production, because it's what Japan did in the 80s and 90s which led to most of the best Japanese animation ever produced.

You can't treat something like this as a one-off hypebait "product" that you'll option more seasons onto later if it becomes a global phenomenon. You have to handle it with respect and care from the start. It's pathetic how animation studios don't have confidence in their own work any more.

I'm anime only and know nothing about this series. Aside from powers feeling asspull-y because they aren't explained I feel like I'm mostly following whatever they're doing. And the power thing I understand this is from a complex source and walls of exposition would be pretty bad so I'm willing to accept the things I'm seeing as part of some cohesive power system and the characters involved more or less know what they're doing.
I gather from the thread they're adapting the story "badly" in the sense that it doesn't follow the order of events or has taken liberties with how the source works, but from an admittedly not-super-examined position it feels like the story they're telling instead works cohesively internally.

For an example of this what I'm talking about, look at various things featuring vampires. Most things don't cover every single weakness or weird piece of lore they traditionally have, but stories tend to pick and establish which ones they're using and ignore the others. As long as the story internally sets up its rules and follows them then its fine, regardless of the source, even if the source separately would be "better".
Now, changing stuff very likely has predictable knock-on effects that should change things down the line and if those things aren't also changed then it makes a huge fucking mess, but as far as this story is concerned they aren't there yet.

My main issue now that pacing is slowing is how to handle Ince. Even with all the stuff they've shown, his first mention is getting pretty late. They probably need to do it in the next 2 eps.

More of a misdirection though. A lot of donghua-onlys seem to think that Azik wants to harm Klein since it looks like the "skeleton" (did China lift its skeleton ban or did LotM get a free pass somehow?) was ominously looking in the direction that Klein left in, or that he is even part of the Secret Order due to the context he appears in. We'll have to see how it plays out.
