To me, it’s less funny than Nichijou, but I like what it’s doing. It is a comedy, but the slice-of-life elements have a much greater focus than in Nichijou. It is structured as basically a collection of vignettes where we look at different stories happening in this place. The tone is also different; City is oddly melancholy at times. By the way, people praise the visuals a lot, but the soundtrack deserves equal praise.

So, in regards to timeline, I'm a bit confused. I originally thought it was set in the present (so about 2017, when the first CITY volume came out), so it was about ten years after Nichijou (whose first album came out in 2007). But that makes no sense, since Yuuko clearly has children older than that.

Even if we assume like, twenty years have passed, Tsurubishi Makabe (Yuuko's husband, the moustache chef) is nostalgic about things from the Showa era. So, does that mean that Nichijou was secretly set in the 70s?

I have terrible memory, so I will not even try to use it to reply, so probably someone will answer in a more satisfying manner.
However, my personal approach is: don't think about it too hard. These are both shows about daily life, but they're clearly not set in the real world, just in a wackier, fluffier version of it.
The "Aioi special" species doesn't really exist, nor do triangular crows or superhuman sentient moe robots.
So while there are some references to things familiar to us, you should assume some flexibility and not expect an exact 1:1 mapping with events, historical periods and dates in real life. Also yeah, even if there were some hard mapping (for whatever reason) nobody guarantees you that Nichijou is set in the same year it came out, for example.
Anyway as I said, I never even begun to think to try to make sense of "realism" in these two series, which clearly don't require it (or at least not in this sense or measure).
Like Yotsuba always being set in >current year with technology and all despite it still being still the same year in-manga.

I watched the first episode (since I finished the manga). I watched it with my friend. He did not care for it. He said it was not for him and that after 15 min, he felt he had been watching for half an hour and was bored. He also asked why the guy had cameras set up. Oh well. Here's the original Japanese text
And this is exactly the spoken Japanese in the anime adaptation
Word for word, it literally says "Naganohara-teacher for a while draw cannot was said." "Hand injury ended up was said."
Not only can Japanese not be translated 1:1, it's also very context sensitive. You have to fill in the blanks yourself, but they are always obvious based on context. However, gender is not specified at all here. The character, Naganohara (which is a surname) has not yet been revealed to be Mio.
So, the English translator has to add the blanks to form a grammatically correct sentence. English isn't grammatically correct without the subject of a sentence being re-stated with pronouns. So what pronoun should be used here to refer to the mysterious and unrevealed Naganohara-sensei? "They" seems most appropriate. "She" is revealing more information to the English reader than a Japanese reader would have got at this point. But it's a minor issue.
It surprises me how many people think "they" is an LGBT-owned word. If you don't want to learn Japanese, fine, but at least understand English.
