Also the specific theme here is more certainly meant to be about how Hakim and Will are actually very similar. Hakim falls in love at first sight the way Will does too. But Hakim is more outgoing and proactive than Will, is tends to be more passive and easy going.

Don't take this as a rag on Mori, I'm just seeing what I'm able to notice reading this again years later. There's also much more information widely available on the internet now.
>>280643790While "Victorian" would obviously imply "during the reign of Victoria" the Edwardian era is often as not subsumed as part of it. For a lot of casual meanings "Victorian" basically includes everything from the Steam Engine to WW1.

I rewatched Royal Space Force: the Wings of Honneamise with some friends and, maybe just because the themes are mostly the same, I compared it to Twin Spica a bit and I think I preferred its attention towards a situation in a somewhat dubiously-managed/supported rocket program
Yeah, it's not the same in a lot of aspects, as Twin Spica is about the testing and trying of what being a part of a program, in spite of what it means to give up and the impact it has on one's dreams, but I think that, even with Lhadatt's disparaged outlook and the greater politics of their space program, Honneamise fills a much more rewarding aspect towards it's launch, so to speak. Maybe it was that we actually got to the rocket and the full space mission as a climax, instead of a portion of a chapter for the final volume, but it's the difference between movie and manga formatting. It also could be the more masculine energy about it all, being in the present while Twin Spica was springboarding a lot from its past setting, but both hit a similar kind of positive energy in the face of what could be disaster, with aims of hope and encouragement behind them.
that being said, I still enjoyed bonking Asumi and the rest of the cast, but, as a retrospective, I can understand some of my feelings towards its shortcomings
>>280602664I love both and prefer Emma for now because it's actually complete and I loved the ending but I think Otoyomegatari is going be Mori's magnum opus once it's finished.

I didn't even realise it reading it the first time but Emma is set in a period shortly before the first world war. Then she did it again with Otoyomegatari during the great game. Wonder why Mori picks such turbulent times to tell her stories.
>>280648377might just be a coincidence, she just really loves victorian maids + comfy steppe culture.
As things are, emma doesn't really spare much thought/time for future conflicts compared to the increasing foreshadowing of the russia conflicts in bride stories.
>>280648377It isn't really shortly though. There's still over a decade from the end of the manga to the start of WWI, and the late 1800s to early 1900s is a popular era to set (western) romantic period fiction because it's peaceful, prosperous, and not as chaotic/dirty as it was early in the industrial revolution.
It's a lot different from the looming threat of Russia in Otoyo.
>>280648510You're probably right that it's just a coincidence. She probably loves the maid outfits of this era and it was a period when class distinctions were beginning to fade out so it was the perfect setting for this romance.

>>280667505She's beautiful, but I'll admit that this is getting a little silly

Maybe Japan doesn't have a great grasp on British class barriers but if they wanted this love competition for Emma by all these rich chads they should've made her an hieress or at least a woman of higher birth. Having her be some maid to some governess makes WHO are gunning for her less believable
>>280667540I feel kinda bad, because at the end of every chapter all I have to say is that Emma isn't pretty enough to justify this. It made sense when it was just Will. One guy falling for a cute maid is understandable, and the class disparity can be interesting. But when Hakkim showed up, I was already on the ropes. If he was more of an asshole maharajas son who wanted to sleep with Emma, it could provide interesting romantic tension. But him also falling in love with her was dumb. And now, everyone in London knows about Emma? She's up all night every night dealing with a flood of letters?

With a lady you have to respect convention because she has power, but with a maid you can buy some stuff, make her comfortable, and sow your wild oats more discreetly. >>280647582Space Force is first and foremost an exercise in world building and animation, but the story is basically a coming of age story, just like Spica. but yeah the ending is much more rewarding, especially as you see the process of building the rocket, the other classmates becoming more responsible, and of course the war raging around the launch.
>>280667505>I'm unable to truly believe that every man who sees Emma just HAS to have herBesides being beautiful despite her plain clothes, Emma's biggest draw must be that she turns down everyone.

This is the strangest Gundam Wing Prequel I've ever read.
>>280647582I think it's hard to make parallels, despite both stories ostensibly beginning with a rocket crash and proceeding with the idea that space travel has lost some of its public support. In Honneamise it's treated as a certain-death suicide mission, while in Twin Spica the tragedy is treated more like a mark of shame. Honneamise is pretty blatantly more about faith or belief, while Twin Spica is more about loss, grief, or overcoming.
I guess Fucchy would be the closest to Lhadatt, they're both guys who effectively decided to become astronauts in order to impress women, and eventually ended up genuinely believing in the cause they initially joined for cynical reasons. But we never get to really see Fucchy's catharsis the way we do with Lhadatt. Lhadatt and Asumi can't be compared at all, since she's blatantly miss perfect who's wanted this her entire life, not a cynical bone in her body. It's hard to even compare her to Lhadatt's girlfriend, although they share a certain ironclad belief.

>>280667359It's a Victorian romance novel world, hard working and virtuous girls are 12/10 to all the handsome young men in England.
>>280667336It doesn't, honestly. I like Emma for a comfy depiction of the era, but the main plot is the romance, and the romance is pretty boring in spite of all the external drama. It's worth reading for the art alone though.
>>280672887It's on the better researched side (low standards), but the thing that stands out immediately is how the lady's maid wears a uniform instead of castoffs from her lady. I understand why though.
>>280668390>to make her theirsBro they're in a fancy gentleman's club talking about her like she's the toast of the town. That's not how they would be talking about a fucking house maid. They should've made her at least like an Estella where she may function like a maid but she is being reared to be a lady. But nope, she's just some governess' bespectacled maid yet the uppercrust bachlors chatter about her like she's the merry widow
Your argument can fuck off
>>280678808Yeah, Emma got tired of responding to so many letters so she decides to take care of the problem for good.
>>280677648>That's not how they would be talking about a fucking house maid.Correction: a super hot fucking house maid. You never hung out and talked about the hot girls you've seen around in your town? lol they're not caring too much about her occupation.
>>280677510>better researched sideWhile Mori did make her mistakes (the airplane and Kelly's age), how was Goodbye, My Rose Garden more accurate than this?
>lady's maid wears a uniform instead of castoffs from her ladyWait, maids in 1890s-1910s UK needed castoffs when employed? Not only that, how was the uniform worn by Hanako from Goodbye my Rose Garden not a castoff as a contrast to the maid uniforms here?
>>280678994You don't know much about history and you're not really listening. Do you know ANYTHING about the victorian era or the british class system? Better yet, do you even have common sense?
>erm these nobles and royals openly trying to court this lowborn servant of a tiny household is just like chatting about gals with da boyz! Let's ignore all this context stuff lolShut up already. Waste of time talking with you.
It's very clear the author just wanted two things out of this setting: a character in a maid outfit, and your "classic" victorian romance, unfortunately these things are diametrically opposed for reasons that are somehow beyond your comprehension.
>>280679301>these nobles and royals openly trying to court this lowborn servantThey're new money, not nobility. It's set in this time period specifically because class distinctions were beginning to break down such relationships however rare were more likely to form. And most of them are only looking to sow wild oats, not marry her.
>>280679283I never said Goodbye, My Rose Garden was better researched than Emma, just that it was better than average because the average for period manga is pretty low.
>how was the uniform worn by Hanako from Goodbye my Rose Garden not a castoff as a contrast to the maid uniforms hereHousemaid =/= lady's maid. Hanako was a lady's maid, so she shouldn't have been wearing a(n afternoon) uniform, but rather her lady's castoffs since she's a higher tier servant.
>>280679921Want to add that Emma is currently not a lady's maid, but rather a maid of all work, who would be wearing the stereotypical maid outfit.
>>280679301A lot of modern period dramas (and fantasy works with aristocrats) blur the lines between classes for our modern consumption. It's personally one of the easier inaccuracies for me to ignore since it helps move the story along more easily, although I agree that the way everyone falls for Emma is quite silly.
>>280665034Oh my god, adorable. Thanks, OP!
I would hit on them exactly like this guy did. Just be honest, don't be an asshole, and let them know that you appreciate them as you see them. You'll learn the rest later.
