I liked the first few episodes well enough, nothing mindblowing but a solid cozy time. I could watch Frieren and Fern train and journey indefinitely.
Then Stark was introduced and the whole thing took a nosedive that it never pulled out of. I finally quit around episode 16, and judging from what I've heard about the exam arc, it was the right call for me. It was just too far from the parts of the series I'd enjoyed.

There are plenty of good shows out there that don't have any fan service. Also I've seen fuck loads of girls into Dan Da Dan and that has a reasonable amount of fan service and I don't think it is because the protag is a whiny cuck (yes I am aware he becomes an edgy 00's scene kid in the manga).

Frieren and ..hack//sign are slow burn stuff (bar the final 8 episodes of Frieren where they spent their budget after emembering people might find 20 episodes of walking and talking 'boring') while Solo Leveling is literally 'each episode the protag wins a fight and gets stronger'. But it still is insanely popular.

If you watch the first 1-3 episodes of Frieren and think it's the same...you may be less than a midwit. It's always, always said in bad faith. There's a real lack of literacy being displayed and to boot "more isekai than isekai" is kinda dumb in the first place. Deep down you realize you're wrong and had to add the failsafe "actually, it's more!".
