You see a fight that shows not just the exorcism features of ritual magic as in the novel, but also how even low-sequence beyonders can use ritual magic to attack others, also including a sneak-peak of the summoning of beyonder creatures from the spirit world and ontop of that an earlier introduction of the Aurora order and its lowest-sequence beyonders of which we got very little of in the novel (we jump straight into middle-sequence beyonders for those). Did I mention demonstrating the grey fog's mind clearance effects and how its ravings affect spirit world creatures? Well, there you go.

The LotM donghua takes risks, but in its boldness it does a lot of things right that no one ever seems to want to mention here, only about the bad things. I wonder why? Perhaps it's some kind of made-up sacredness of the source-material and deviation even when they are for the better, are seen as a "stain"? I don't get the stiffness on this issue...

If you want to say something is mysterious and eery, you need to at least bring something of the level as the telegraph station scene in Bansy Harbor or the marionette cathedral in Foggy Town. The stuff that actually gives you the creeps. Tingen doesn't have it at all beside the reasonable developments for mysteriousness but not eeryness.
There's also the subtlety aspect which you again didn't bring up at all. Though I guess one of the primary issues you seem to have with the donghua is that it's "too subtle" to begin with.

Western Continent was basically memory-holed into being off-screen mystery niggas. Cuttlefish initially floated the idea of writing a third book (back when he was writing LotM 1) which would center around the western continent, but by his own admission writing sequels was simply too fucking hard for him with all the characters and plotlines he had (and was failing to) balance. I have read the whole novel 4 times and i am so annoyed by you people.

Wasnt every novel fan up until the donghua released begging new readers to stick through the 1st volume, and not drop it for like 200 chapters if they found it too slow? And now that the donghua found a way to condense it, into a more pleasant viewing experience for new readers they suddenly cry because its not the exact same? These elitists will never be satisfied. This adaptation is incredible. And way better than we could ever hope for from a 15 episode season. They should look around the scene and see the butchered adaptations with slide show animations.

And you know what this does for the novel? The new people will SITCK through the 1st volume. Because they will WANT to see what is cut and skipped. Its the best of both worlds. In the end of the day An anime is always a promotion for the Novel. And it does a very good job at it.
