I decided to read the manga after episode 2 and it's insane just how much it falls off. The art is still gorgeous, sure, but the relationship between two MCs and MCs themselves got so boring, I really couldn't bring myself to care much for all the exposition fest.
It really feels like watering down the main focus (MC's feelings towards the fake friend he used to like), whether it was done to applease homophobic larger audience or not, has killed manga's strongest point and vibe.
Also I checked the comments under the chapters of current episodes and one of the most popular ones were like "I don't understand why this is tagged shounen ai, they are just good friends so far, it's friendship" and now I don't know if I'm the insane one or is it everyone else.

Its not as rare in bl manga nowadays, though many are either more heavy handed or a bit too bizarre (unadaptable) I think it has to do with the amount of distance between the audience/author and the material, there's not as much need to protect and relationships can feel wrong at every level.

Now imagine the anxiety of realizing you're gay and repressing your homosexuality in a small rural town, where you don't know if people will accept you or hate you - and your only real friend, who you were also attracted to, has been replaced with a skinwalker
And because he was your only real friend, and there's no one else who you trust will accept you for who you are, and you're already at the edge of mindbreak because you know your best friend has died, you start to accept the skinwalker as a replacement for your friend: because as an imitation he at least naturally understands your feelings having consumed your best friend's memories.

If you can deal with the MC being gay without having a knee-jerk homophobic reaction, you can appreciate that it being a horror story about being gay is the point.
And it's really well done horror with that premise
