If it were to come back, it would get a condensed remake in the same vein as UY or Ranma.

Anyone here read the novels or Knight of Aqualord? Are these any good? Next is one of my favorite anime of all time and Try is fine but it's nowhere near as good as S1 and Next. I've been wanting to read a proper sequel to Next for years but something tells me that it just wouldn't feel the same as the first two seasons.

They're a bit ropy until Kanzaka finds his voice. I don't know what he was dealing with in real life but Slayers Vol. 14 and 15 are so out of tone for the series I felt sick after reading them. Special and Smash are very cute reads.

Knight of the Aqualord is ass when it comes to pacing, but it does have some cute shipping moments with Lina and Gourry and RIKSFALTO. It was adapted from a video game script, so don't take it too seriously.

Try is actually better than both OG and Next after you read some of the LNs and get a better grasp on the background lore of Slayers. All you have to do is cut out all of the filler episodes that obliterated the season's pacing. The "proper sequel" to Next is Vol. 9-15, which JNovel should have translated and made available to Western audiences by now.

The "filler" episodes where actually some of the best parts of S1 and Next as I remember and made the whole experience a lot better (I was shoked to learn that fucking Martina was a filler character), so Try having shit fillers is a big downside for me (the fish episode is probably the worst Slayers episode ever). Also the "serious" parts weren't as good as Next's, again, it has been quite a while so I could change my opinion on this one.
That being said, Try still has many great moments, the bit at the beginning where Lina builds a pyramid and buries herself inside it is one of my favorite gags of the whole series.

In both the anime and novels the Barrier is gone once Hellmaster is obliterated, but the motivations of Lina and Gourry are entirely different after the fight. In the anime, Lina, Gourry, Amelia, and Zelgadis accidentally end up outside of the barrier after destroying Seiruun's entire navy with a Dragon Slave.

In the light novels, Gourry loses the Sword of Light. Since Lina was "only" letting Gourry travel with her because she wanted the Sword, and Gourry was "only" traveling with Lina to protect her (which he can't do without a magic sword), they had no reason to stay paired up. So, Lina made up the excuse of needing to travel with Gourry to help him find a new magic sword to replace the Sword of Light, which keeps them on the Continent as they explore ancient myths and treasure maps.

It's even more convoluted since Kanzaka says the light novels don't connect Slayers with Lost Universe, but their respective anime are connected. Good (bad) news is no one watched or read Lost Universe, so it doesn't matter.

Probably best to let the series rest. Evolution/R was just a worse version of S1. It had a couple admittedly great gags with Zelgadis trying to hunt Pokota, but everything else was pretty bad.

Maybe instead the right call here is to explore one of the other planes. Something like Lost Universe, but not terrible. If it goes well then they can think about trying something with Slayers again.

The tragedy of Revo/Evo isn't that they tried to adapt S1, it's that the writers went back to trying to adapt the light novels instead of continuing to make their own story like they did with Try. Revo/Evo are poor interpretations of Vol. 4-6, which had been skipped in Slayers OG. The advantage the anime had is that the main cast had reasons to want to be off-Continent entirely.

Since magic is a lost art outside of the Barrier, Lina is the strongest person wandering outside the Continent with the exception of Knights.
Gourry lost his Sword in Try, and the anime hadn't broached the topic of the Blast Sword yet; it could very well have been outside of the Barrier the whole time.
Zelgadis still needs a cure for his chimerism. Since the Aqualord is dead, the Claire Bibles are gone, the golden dragons won't let him get access to their information, and he has no connections to Zephilia's Eternal Queen, he would want to look for a cure anywhere in the world.
Amelia, as the princess of Seiruun, would want to actually begin diplomatic dealings with foreign nations like what the Kingdom had tried at the start of... Try.

The writers of a theoretical fourth season were handed a blank slate, and they didn't trust in their abilities to make something as off-the-rails batshit insane as Try a second time. And I think that's very sad.
