you're getting thought terminating answers here, but what I think happened was we'd witnessed the unwitting deconstruction of shoujo love triangles. sakura's love for sasuke should be her fake feelings, where character development would snap her out of it. the genre expectation created a lot of shipper tension, and honestly the franchise had been milking this.
it kind of did its female readers dirty in that way especially when the narrative explicitly became one of disillusionment (of naruto towards her) and the dropping out of romcom races. it wouldn't have helped that naruto ended up with a very domestic girl too, and the sequel showing sakura's life as a trainwreck confirmed beyond all doubts the writers knew what they were doing.
I guess it was deserved when all those disillusioned foids decided to turn battle shounen into female writing style fujo fests for their own tastes. deconstruction is just that destructive
