It's the aspect of humans combatting a supernatural entity without using the supernatural themselves. No idea if there's a specific name for it, but it definitely feels good when you see human ingenuity put to the test like that. There's no magic McGuffin you need to hurt the monsters, like quinques in Tokyo Ghoul, it's just the assets that exist in reality combined with the way they're used in response to a fantastical threat.

I'm guessing most of the ones in the countryside move to the cities. It'd be much harder to take someone's place and start cannibalizing others when in a small community where everyone knows each other. Although some of the more reckless newborns could just decide to wipe out the entire town before moving on.

One of my favorite aspects of this story is how down to earth it is and as a result how realistic in feels: no grandstanding, no elaborate plans, no crazy technology, no implausible rules like "you have to shoot it in the head or else it never dies" like with zombies.
Just
>okay we've found out how the threat works and how to distinguish it vs a human with 100% accuracy, now line them up and execute them
And no time wasted on someone bitching about the heckin morality. And when Shinichi hesitates at the end he still goes through with it thank FUCK. My original watch had me worried the ending was going to be shit.
That's why it's a classic.

Portable x-ray machines are still really big. Even if they weren't, if you ID'd a parasyte it would just kill you as soon as it knew you knew, or if the parasytes figured out what you were doing. Also, the x-ray machine wouldn't do any good in a large crowd where people are constantly shifting.

Metal chapter
The rate at which typical parasite kills was sadly never made explicit, but it takes about a month for a human being to eat and digest their own bodyweight worth of food. Meat is also highly nutritionally dense.
A parasite needs to sustain both itself and what was left of the host, presumably raising energy expenditure significantly. They probably eat more often than once a month. Significantly so, given Reiko's estimate of 34 eaten humans (in about...a year?) which according to her was lower than usual for parasites.
This means that every single day of inaction means more people consumed and a bloody, imperfect plan implemented *immediately* is likely to save more lives that carefully hunting down parasites one by one with no "collateral damage"
Long story short the military guy did nothing wrong

It's brutal, but realistically yeah. Even if they had to do something as grim and evil as torching the entire building, it'd technically be worth it. The number of casualties they've kept this to so far is still disturbing, but probably the best an operation like this could do, and a drop in the bucket compared to what each parasite has done.

Plus, think of the long-term rammifications. It's not just
>kill a parasite, save 60 lives
they were going after a cluster that was setting up a hive, with the express purpose of perpetuating their cannibalistic ways. This matters not just for how organized and more effective they were getting in attacking people, but consider the fact that these parasites have no known way of reproduction. The amount of parasites is fixed, and an attack on them like this is a significant blow to not just their capabilities, but also their ideology. Remaining parasites will either realize they'll need to adapt, or they'll go back to practices that'll eventually expose them again.

Thanks OP. This chapter, and arc in general, do a good job of showcasing how human societies are a kind of super organism and where all of our real strength lies. I don’t want to sound like I’m shitting on the individual, but it’s incredible what humans are capable of when we work together in sophisticated and well-managed networks. Like real parasites, as soon as the immune system caught onto them they had no chance

It's probably because Ajin is relatively fresh in my mind but this is around where I started disliking how the military was written. It goes beyond unpreparedness and into being props for Goto to show off. >polluting will become a more serious crime than murder
I firmly believe we'll see the day officials and businesses will be demonized for their willful neglect of public risks to chase profits. But it'll be long after they're dead and the damage is what future generations are forced to live with. Thinking littering could be treated on the same level as murder both shows Hirokawa was more autistic than Reiko and is more of the usual punching down suits do to shift responsibility to the consumer.

>>281164160
>You can never tell humans what to do!
Says the man who makes a career of following orders. Not that there's anything wrong with that, apart from when they were just gunning down civilians on panicked maybes. But humans absolutely do not work in their own best interests. They work in the interests of those above them, who are too short-sighted to work in humanity's interests. Aliens murdering randos from the shadows is about the silliest solution there too, but Hirokawa's far from in his right mind.

Have Uragami covertly positioned outside the building when everyone gets off work and have him flag the parasites one by one as they exit the building. I think best case would've been going through the whole evacuation and X-ray process, assigning 1 or 2 guards to each identified parasyte, and have them on standby to blast them simultaneously after everyone was scanned.
It likely would've still been messy, but the killing 1 at a time plan obviously didn't work, and something like sending all the parasytes to 1 specific bus and the humans to other ones would quickly get noticed that they were being separated out and not just randomly moved.

That's objectively a worse idea from a citizen-protection standpoint, since you can't guarantee if the sleep gas will or will not harm the humans. For example, too much sleepy gas and they won't be waking up after. Besides, how would you tell who is suspicious when they're all out cold? The parasites are supposed to look identical to regular humans in all ways but behaviourally.

The military was incredibly competent here. They killed all parasytes except for one, incredibly powerful motherfucker. Who's to believe the guns that can turn people into swiss cheese and their organs into minced meat from one shot, would be completely ineffective against one guy? They followed him into a more open room, but half of them or all of them, Goto would still have survived all those shots. The commander even brought a goddamn grenade launcher and it does nothing against Goto. It is simply that Goto is too strong, beyond any conceivable means. Theoretically the flamethrower idea would have worked, but the commander already told you why it isn't feasible to bring flamethrowers indoors in the middle of a metropolitan city.

They knew the parasites themselves are practically bulletproof, and they knew at least one of the 'people' in there was a mishmash of several parasites. For all they knew, it could've been more than one.
The soldiers did their duty well but it's a failure of command that they failed to bring something to deal with something that was potentially completely immune to bullets.
Should've brought some sort of chemical weapon. Halothane, acid, poison, anything in case they encountered something guns couldn't kill. Even if they failed at least they'd know what work and what doesn't.

As I said, losing to Goto sucks but is an acceptable rate of casualties. You need to look at the big picture, or you'll never be able to lead men.

The operation as a whole is a win. The parasites and the traitorous popular leader are no more.
Goto cannot do much by himself. Eventually a method of detecting him by sight or weight or smell will be found, and he'll be killed by a massive air strike of napalm or chemical weapons or similar.

Its no matter. The point is that all the regular parasites were killed, and the soldiers performed within reason in executing the mission. Japan can be proud of the JSDF.

the only thing that should have been obvious even without hindsight is that eliminating them one by one won't work, since the military knew they can sense each other
beyond that, I don't think it's reasonable to blame the military for not bringing chemicals or fucking flamethrowers, they were reasonably well prepared

but to answer your question:
escort the workers outside the detection range and only then blow up the parasite
ideally after having it board an "escape" vehicle so it cannot run or retaliate if the soldier botches the surprise shotgun blast
and don't let the remaining workers hear the gunshot
Goto still murders the soldiers, but at least the civilian casualties should be lower
try to make everything be as swift as possible, to give the remaining parasites less time to react
escort the workers according to a predetermined list (having a list is a good idea in an evacuation one way or another), so the parasites cannot bunch up
also, I would suggest trying to make the whole "crazed gunman" scenario more believable, but I don't really see how they could do it—the kind of heavy presence the military needs will make their true intention obvious to the parasites, no matter how it's dressed up

...no? Planning for the Parasites catching on is still just being thoughtful, and if they wanted to just start gunning people down, then they would've just gunned down the main hall the minute everyone saw Parasites. They're still exercising a shitton of control and minimize civilians deaths as much as possible within the main hall, even after going guns-out.
>if the first plan was more thought out they could have prevented a lot of casualties
Not really. The only flaw was in the execution, rather with how quick they were to bring out Uragami, and even then, it's still reasonable from the standpoint that they know the Parasites are gonna start making moves. Otherwise, the manga makes it abundantly clear that this is the best way to quick set up and "discretely" select and execute them with heavy-load shotgun shells. The fact that it was still loud and such is just the reality of the situation

And seriously, "a lot of casualties?" Four civilians. Maybe five if you include >>281134715 but he's also likely to just end up living with a colostomy bag. The most that could definitely have been prevented is the one that's directly Uragami's fault. Otherwise, it's ridiculous to act like this is an egregious amount of civilian casualties for this kind of operation, let alone compared to the number of people these monsters kill and eat

>the manga isn't really subtle with it
>comparing the military guy with a serial killer
I wouldn't take it in that regard, given that the manga already plays a lot with how acting "monstrous" or allying with monsters is required to win. Izumi, Uragami, Reiko, Migi, and this dude are all inhuman in one way or another.

Making an extremely intricate plan just ensures that more parasites will be able to escape.
Hitting them with violence of action and surprise worked fine. There's also zero reasonable alternative options brought forward by you critics.

The reality is that you'll never be satisfied by these types of operations, because you have an innate disdain for utilitarian "good enough" type thinking, being romanticists and idealists first and foremost.

The idea of having to do these types of decisions is simply immaterial. There's zero respect or intellectual curiosity involved.
Anonymous No.281188076 [Report] >>281188432
>>281187724
I think that kind of thinking can be kind of dangerous preciely because it's exactly correct, but it's also very easy to take too far with regards to how much of that violence is in fact neccesary violence. That some casualties are unavoidable doesn't mean one can't do the due diligance to minimise them as much as possible, but it's easy to get too caught up in the idea that it has to be done and simply write off people that could still potentially be saved. Especially given that the types of people often calling the shots on this kind of shit are exactly the types of (human) parasites who are more than happy to take advantage of that kind of thing to their own benefit.
And don't get me wrong I think the military handled things fairly well in this scenario, given the circumstances. I just think it's always best to take a step back and look over things before waxing poetic about neccesary sacrifices and martyrs.

Let's say it all goes perfectly, you somehow install all this equipment and operate it without parasites being any the wiser about what you're doing, all in a week, and you've managed to properly tag and verify all parasites employed within city hall. Let's be even more than fair and say that, within another week, you somehow plan and execute simultaneous raids on parasites in a way that doesn't risk a single human life.

Meanwhile, Reiko said she ate 34 Humans, on the lower end of parasites. As a being actively interested in the question of how long a parasite can go without cannibalism. I wouldn't be surprised if many parasites were attacking and eating a human every 1-2 weeks. At least 6 parasites are being depicted as being shot/killed in the raid so far. That is 6-12 civilians you've already allowed to die, up to x3 more than the operation so far.

When I read this a long time ago, it was shocking considering the buildup in the last chapter when he could've escaped easily like Goto but just simply by walking through the scanner. He had the stage to be a final boss, the demon in the inner part of a evil lair. Instead of transforming into a big bad monster, he just died anticlimatically for them. It really sells the message here.

Absolutely. They should've listened to Shiniji and have a flame thrower or incendiary just in case for scenarios like these. If they were truly desperate instead of cocky then Goto wouldn't have gotten away clean.

Not him, but you have no ground to stand on when it comes to "basic human empathy," given how eagerly you're leaping to being quite rude and dismissive in your posts, all over someone discussing the ethics of a fictional scenario where humans have to do whatever they can to stop bodysnatchers that are actively killing and eating people, and then capping it off with trying to be super smug. You should act more maturely while we're otherwise calmly discussing such an engaging piece of fictional media.

The type of utilitarian bigger picture thinking the military is displaying here is exactly what Hirokawa's unhinged rant was supposed to criticize, by taking the idea to its logical conclusion. There probably wasn't an easier and cleaner solution than this one. Nonetheless, if you don't see Yamagishi's karmic punishment coming from a mile away I don't know what to tell you.

You're feigning injury. Where's the fault in my characterization of you as a judgmental/emotional poster, with intellectual inability to engage with differing viewpoints?

You've dismissed several posts out of hand, leaving only pithy remarks, while justifying it with your opponent having failed to uphold a basic standard of ethics, essentially barring them from human status in the debate.

This viewpoint, and resulting mode of meeting and communicating with other humans is arrogant to the extreme. You will likely continue to dehumanize your opponents forever, since your "values" are so superior.
Meanwhile threads turn to shit whenever someone like you comes along, because you cannot spare even a modicum of effort to debate your own viewpoints under pressure.
Fragile.

Start killing the parasytes after they're out of the 300 meter range of the other ones, this will stop them from noticing their deaths and acting out and maybe use harpoon guns or something similar that won't be as loud as shot guns to not alarm the people and the parasytes.
Anonymous No.281190014 [Report] >>281190149

I think they'll still feel their presence being snuffed out, even if over 300 meter radius. Might be misremembering tonight.

The issue is that the extermination op wanted it to be airtight. No forewarning, no ability for the parasites to organize. Slowing things down by extending the time parasites have to react and you end up with unexpected circumstances.

That just might be me being risk-averse.

That's the problem, there isn't anything quiet and effective enough to deal with parasytes, they don't sleep remember

Anonymous No.281190149 [Report]

I'm pretty sure that's not the case since the only reason they can feel each other being killed is because of the telepathy.

That's fine and all but look at where it got them, as soon as one parasyte died the rest started making moves to survive, ofc this is with hind sight but still they should've anticipated that kind of reaction with the telepathy in play.

The less risk averse actions would be to make sure they didn't find out that they're snuffing them out imo.

Not to say they did the worst job ever, just that they should've put more thought into the initial plan and didn't just rely on "oh well if things go to shit we just go in and shoot them"
Anonymous No.281190220 [Report]
would you still love me if I was a parasyte and not really me?
Anonymous No.281190293 [Report]

Actually I don't think it's ever said that parasytes don't sleep, migi even before losing 30% of his cells did sleep just not like in a coma like he does now.
We do know being drunk affects them somewhat but the government would need to do experiments on a live one before they could prove anything concrete on how to deal with them so that's out of the equation.

A harpoon through the chest should be enough to destroy a person's heart but it could be any weapon as long as it's not loud enough to alert them
